New to diesel tractors,my case ih 885 has no block heater, it has one in the lower rad hose. I plan on using the tractor for snow removeal, new battery, she turns over, seems hard, then dead battery. I have been charging the battery then boosting with my gas tractor and she will start. Any help will be appriciated.

Make sure the heater is working, then plug it in for as long as possible before using. My dad has a 695 (little brother to the 885) and he plugs it in for as long as he can, also he has a little electric space heater he sets on the front tire and aims at the block for the same period of time. Starts like a champ down to below zero temps, without the use of ether.

I have a CIH 4240(newer version of the 885?)without the block heater but ether. If it's under 32 F, she won't start even with the ether? I must be doing something wrong? Jeff

You should be able to get a freeze plug type block heater from your CIH dealer for that tractor for around $40. It would be a wise investment. Sounds like you don't have enough battery in it, again get the proper one's from your dealer. With that tractor with good battery's, cables and starter you should be able to crank it for several minutes in the coldest weather, not that you should have to tho.

I don't know much about that tractor but a few years ago I had a Case 930 and that thing would start when ever I wanted it to as long as the battery was charged up. It had a manifold heater on it and you held the key or button do not remember which it had but you did that for 30 seconds or so and it would turn over a few times and start right up. So does your have one and are you using it?? Or is it maybe there and needs to be replaced

Had a 585 and a 584. In line heater in the rad hose, not a little car
one, the big can of pop sized thing. Would start down to at least -
30. You need a good battery, good cables, and a good starter.

We had to clean the terminals on the cables every so often and
once had to rebuild a starter.
