Well, I told you my wife OR the Irish Setter was expecting. Good news it's the other ONE.
Now she want's a "welping" box for the dog - what the heck is that? Thought they just had babies where ever and took care of them!

Keeps them together and warm. Where does the dog stay (inside, outside)? If inside with a decent temp and no cold drafts just a frame a foot or so high will do it. You can google e whelping box and spend bunches of money.

We use an 80x120 cm pallet frame about 8 inches tall and plenty of straw. As soon as the babies start getting out, we just get rid of the frame.

A whelping box is a large open-topped box that enables the dog to deliver her litter without crushing the pups.

It is usually wooden, about four feet square, with 12 - 14 inch high sides. There are usually substantial dowel rods installed about six inches up from the bottom of the box which are installed so that they are about six inches out from the sides. This allows the pups to slide (or be slidden) under the dowel rod without being laid down on by the dog.

This also contains the pups so they can't wander away from their mother until they've developed enough to jump out of the box.

Good luck with your whelping. My female boxers have had a large number of litters over the years. My current female has been spayed, and I don't plan to have any more dogs that will whelp.

One neat idea I have seen is a round kiddy pool. 5 or 6 ft in diameter, made of plastic. Pretty cheap, easy to clean.
 
You can make a good whelping box with one new clean sheet of plywood plus a few scraps.

4x4 floor setting on styrafoam to keep it off the floor and warm, 3 4'x18" sides from the rest of the sheet for 3 sides of the box, then a 2x8 across the 4th side so the mamma can hop in and out to go potty, but the puppies can't get out for the first several weeks.

Put a rail around the inside, so the puppies can crawl back under the rail but the rail keeps the mamma off the babies. The dowel idea works well.

Hang a light bulb over the box for heat (85F max)and cover the floor with newspaper, lots of newspaper, layed out flat so you can just roll it up and throw it away

I screw the sides together with galvanized angle brackets, easy to assemble and disassemble.

Good luck and sell them at 7 weeks, that is 3 weeks after they become poop machines.
 
It doesn't have to be much.4x4 with 12 inch sides. A friend of mine down the road made one for his dog, got some old blankets for the bottom, then she had them under his bed. A couple of days later he had to put the pups in the welping box, then the mom started using it.
 
Friends of mine who raise GS dogs just use a plastic kids swimming pool about 4 feet in dia. They've whelped dozens in the same pool......
 
We used small plastic kids pool for English
Bulldogs, and Beagles. Pups can"t get out, Mom
can get away from the pups when they drive her
nuts, and it"s easy to keep clean/hose out when
needed. Pups will pee, and old blankets need wash
often to stay warm and dry.
 
I had never heard of one till my wife figured out our dog was going to have pups. I made it just like my wife said. Ply wood bottom, 2X10 sides, full of fresh clean straw. Worked half a day on it cause wife said it had to have flush corners and couldn't have rough edges on the inside. How in the world did dogs live for millions of years before plywood was invented, I will tell you. Just like our litte dog had and raised her pups after I built the box, under the wood shed.

Welp, Thanks for the Help!
Don't know if it's gonna be easier to find a small swimming pool in the middle of February or scrounge around for an old sheet of plywood and accesories.
The dogs going to be in the heated basement - since we have 4-H at our house, might just let them figure it out!

PS: Now my wife's hoping for St. Patrick day puppies for the Irish Setter - go figure.
