Under CDL Insurance?

If you have an under cdl Truck (Under 26,000), with no intention of pulling a trailer being questionably over the cdl rate, whats the general idea for insurance? Is it going to be about the same as if you were running a cdl vehicle, or closer to the 1 ton truck side? What about anything else? Just doing some wishful thinking, but have no idea what the insurance would look like, or what would be required. Insurance office is closed today, so no use calling them, not that its useful when they are open. The insurance is a potential dealbreaker on the idea, which would be a good heavy used (under $10,000) truck to use 5-10 times a year locally only. Again just wishful thinking.

I have a Ford F700, it took a while for the office to figure out what it was, but the insurance rates (State Farm) are reasonable to the value of the truck. I don't run it for hire, just my own stuff.

The value of the truck is probably the big deal with any heavy vehicle. A $100,000 Peterbilt is just plain expensive, no matter how you look at it.

i guess all states have different rules but here in Texas if its for farm use...ins aint bad at all...my 1 ton and 25' gooseneck cost a extra 100 bux every 6 months added to other policy...thats liability and uninsured motorist...believe it or not, thats thru State Farm.
i got license for 25,900 GVW on truck/trailer...only time i go over is haulin hay...local law has instructions from Austin to leave hay trucks alone during drought...not sure what it gonna be like this year with all the rain.

As long as your under 26001 everything should be the same. And of course the insurance rates will reflect the value of the truck and trailer if you put one on the policy. My truck ins is very reasonable F-350 10500 GVW or something like that. A friend of mine has a F550 and its not a whole lot more.

My experience here is that when you're dealing with Farm plated trucks, the larger the truck... the cheaper the insurance.
I think my Ranger is somewhere around 700/year for 2 mil liability. Our ton used to be in the 4-500 range for same.... and the tandem? Just a hair over 200 for the same coverage.
If you're talking commercial licence as in commercial, FOR HIRE... whole different ball game.
In that case I'm sure the tandem would be a lot more... but then you're also dealing with CGL (bonded) policies and such...

bigger the truck; cheaper the insurance for me in NE. on my semi with farm plates, it was like $48 per 6months for liability.

I have a F800 dump truck 28,000 GVW with minimun liabilty non CDL thats cheaper than regular pu and car. Im in texas and do have CDL. Only personal use??

Yes it would only be for personal use. I was thinking of something along the lines of a retired school bus cut down to make a stakebody or something similar. Like I said Under $10,000 (preferably 4-5) and used maybe 5 or 10 times a year. Something cheap to keep and simple.

Which insurance company do you use. I am in Houston and I have never had any luck finding cheap insurance. I usually only need insurance for 3 to 6 days. Paid $600 bucks in july for 2 days only ( school bus) only needed insurance to get from houston to the border. Insurance cost me the same as the bus.
