When did the 12 volt systems in automobiles become the standard. My brother and I were talking about that last night after I told him of the video of the JD 830 starting with a 24 volt electric starter. He was surprised by the 4-six volt batteries. My first vehicle with 12 volt was a 1963 Ramble, as I remember. I had a 1960 Ford Falcon and I think it still had the six volt and generator. I'm just curious as to the time frame. C.L.
 
Are you sure about 55 for Chevy? I seem to remember my cousins 55 Chevy being 6 volt. Maybe not,but pretty sure.
 

The reason I was asking, was that the 830 (1959-60) used four 6 v batteries than two 12v batteries.
 
We had a 58 IH 340U that was 6V but like others said bigger tractors had gone to higher voltage already. I think they probably used up all the 6 volt parts they had on the smaller tractors where it worked just fine if maintained. I think the auto industry was all 12V by 58.
 
I have a 2 ton Chev-1955 2nd seies that came from factory with 12 volt. That 2nd series also had the new body style. Still have the truck.
 
I stand corrected. Both '55 & '56 Chevys were 12 volt. My crs memory failed me again....lol.
 
My FIL bought a new 400 IHC in 56 or 57 ?. Any how he had a choice of 6 or 12 volt system. He took 12 because his other stuuf was 12 volt.
 
Hi , to all you younger generation. 1955 was the year the 12 volt system/alternators arrived in vehicles. Cheers, Murray
 
LenND, did the truck have an alternator or generator? I just looked at a '55-'56 wiring diagram and it shows a generator. That may be what I'm thinking of, if that's the case. C.L.
 
It had a generator. And I think the original one mjght still be on it. I quit farming but still drive the truck a couple times a year. Len

You both may be right. 55 Chevy pickups could be had as either 6V or 12V. Our neighbor had one he ordered new with 6V. He said he was forever sorry for having done that, but everything else he owned at the time had 6V systems, so he specified 6V on the new 55 Chevy pickup.
56 and later Ford and Chevy were 12V and I doubt that 6V was any longer an option.

I also remember that the "new style" 55 Chevy cab was a mid year thing, early 55's still looked like a 54 cab and late 55's had the new cab.
I don't remember if the neighbors 6V 55 chevy pickup was the old or new style cab ?

Anyone know if they built any new style 55 Chevy pickups with 6V ?
 
Your Falcon would have been 12V, as Ford switched to 12V in 56. They were 12V with a generator through the 64 model year. An alternator was an option on some models in 63-64 and standard starting with the 65 model.

My guess would be 1960.
I did have a 1960 plymouth with an alternator.

back then 2 6v batteries had more CCA than 1 12v, so 4 6v had more CCA than 2 12 v and that JD needed all the CCA it could get
very common to use 2 6v on diesel tractors up till some time in the 70's
now battery tech is such that one 12v will work

Chrysler went to 12 volt, negative ground for the 1956 model year. Same year they came out with the push button control for the PowerFlite automatic.

American cars went to 12 volts in the mid 50's. They started adopting Alternators in the early 60's as current demands increased as stuff like airconditioning and power windows became popular. Volkswagen didnt go 12 volt until 1967 which I think was probably the last company to finally switch

Been pretty well covered. I was a teenager in the 50s and was very interested in cars. 1955 Chevy v8 had 12 volts, 1955 Fords had 12 volts. Highway patrolmen with 55 Fords commented about the big special 6 volt batterys they ran.

1954 Cadillacs may have had 12 volts, not sure, rarely ran across anyone I knew with a Cadillac. I did have a 55 Buick with a 12 volt system, 54 Buicks may have had 12 volts. In the back of my mind I'm thinking the 53 Buicks and Cadillacs had 12 volts but not sure.

Chrysler went to 12 volts in 1956.

It was interesting to hear the old straight 8 Buicks start on 6 volts.

I was a teenager in the '50s too, but I couldn't remember the systems. The '63 rambler was my first vehicle with an alternator.
 
That was a 55 1st series,They had some 54 bodies left over ,made a few changes in them and called them a 55 1st series.You could buy a 2nd series at the same time,1st series were still 6 v but no 2nd series were.Some Fords had a starting problem in 55 because of being 6 v,56 didnt have that trouble because thats when they went to 12 v
