Battery Acid

I have a small new battery that has never been filled, and needs acid. Can I dump acid out of a old battery and fill my new batt.? Thanks Stan

Stan I dont know if thats a good idea. When I worked at a outdoor equipment dealer we would get sulfuric acid in a box to fill new batterys from NAPA. Why dident you get acid with your new battery? When someone came in for a new battery, we had to fill one and put it on charge! J

Get new electrolyte for that battery, JD dealers and others stock it as they still sell some dry charge batteries.
Their is a pretty specific "wake up " procedure for bringing a freshly filled dry charge battery to life. I will try to link you to instructions.
Activate dry charged battery

Ya you could but I would not do that. Doing it would be sort of like using used oil to change your oil in your tractor. Say you change the oil in your truck and then used that to change the oil in your tractor. Last I knew you could buy battery acid pretty cheap as in around $10 for enough to fill 10 car battery's. Ya I know you do not need that much but didn't that battery come with acid?? I know when I buy a battery for one of the motorcycles is comes with a small bottle of acid to fill it with

Local NAPA sold it in 5-gallon jugs........cheap. Been retarded for about 5 years and still got a piece of a jug a-sitting in the shop storage room.

That's not a good idea. You could get the acid from a parts store, or just put in distilled water and give it a good charge. During Charging the water will become acidic. The acid just kind of gives the battery a jump start or head start on the charged condition.

Just putting in distilled water will not work. Where did you get that idea? Water is to be added to a battery that is in service for a while & is low on fluid.

Battery electrolyte acid is available at NAPA auto parts stores. Use only battery acid, not water. Water will do nothing but ruin an otherwise good battery.

Small batteries (lawnmower sized) normally come with a small sealed container of the acid needed to fill it. Are you sure it didn't come in the box with the battery?

Gotta start with acid, not water. The reason you add distilled water later is that it is the water portion that boils off, so the original acid portion is still there.

Hello 37 chief,
New battery should have new electrolyte installed in order to properly activate it.
Some times it also needs a charge before it is put in service. That is what i would do.
Although is called battery acid its actually,
65% water and 35% sulfuric acid by weight, and 24% sulfuric acid by volume.
Guido.
