over fill on oil

What will happen when you put a quart too much oil in a tractor when changing the oil? Thanks Amo

people'll laugh at you and call you an idiot
Have you started it and filled the filter/galleys and checked again? May not hurt anything, but I'd just suck/drain a little out.

My college educated son did this and said it made a strange noise when he cut it off. We drained the excess off and it seems okay. Thanks Amo,

When I was a private a long time ago, my "boss" sent me to change the oil in a duece and a half on the line. I got it all drained, filters changed and oil back in except about a gallon when I ran out. Took the empty can back and was taking out another 5gal can when he came and told me I had a phone call and he'd finish. Told him I was done except topping off and said he just needed to finish filling. When I got back outside, he was standing there with this stupid look on his face and a puddle of oil under the truck. He topped off real good. Poured the oil in until it ran over the valve cover. We had a ball over that for a couple years until everyone that knew it had left.

One of the car dealerships I worked at had an oil gun to fill oil. This was a cheap one that you couldn't program to shut off but it had a trigger lock. Every so often one of the guys wouldn't pay attention and fill it literally to the top.

My former son-in-law did that to my daughter's truck. She called with the "What's the matter" question and stated, "Jim added a quart of oil because his car had needed some added."
The main symptom was smoking at stops. It was being forced out somewhere. She confirmed the overfill so I sent her to the service station for a drain and refill. We continued to drive for over 180k and never had any problems.

Used to have a Toyota van, the original dipstick was missing because someone had put a dipstick heater in it. It started to miss at certain speeds, I drained the oil down, and it ran fine. Figure the crank was whipping bubbles into the oil and making the lifters spongy.

When I was in the sixth grade, my brother asked if I'd like to change the oil in his '55 Studebaker. I was overjoyed! He showed me the drain plug and the fill location and the new case of oil, then he went in the house. Oil was sold in 24 quart cases then. When I came in and told him I needed more oil, things went downhill fast. I had never seen such weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth.

I guess he assumed that I was smart enough to know how many quarts it held.

One quart over isn't necessarily a good or a bad thing. If the level is too high the crank can slap the oil while it's running and it is very hard on the bearings. That can cause excessive bearing wear. On a 5 quart pan, one quart over is only 20 percent. I doubt you will do any damage, but I wouldn't recommend taking the chance.

Have heard of overfilling on some foreign cars that would cause cylinder fill and lock up engine and break internal parts. Hydrostatic lock it is called.
