Reddy heater update

I finally figured out my heater problem. I ordered from reddyparts, and they were great, new air adjusting screws and a gage. I set the pump pressure, but it would still shut down. But it would run with the top cover off. Well I notcied my friends reddy heater and they had jumped something on the side were the wireing is. So I started to wonder, hummmmmm. Well I went back to the web site reddyparts Q&A, and read, if the heater pops the reset button after 15-30 seconds to jump the reset button and see if it stays running. Bingo! the reset button must be bad. I ran the haeter for 10 minutes with the cover on with out it shutting down, so I think Im all set. Thanks all for the help.

Good to hear--so you would recommend reddyparts as a source? Got a couple of friends with heater problems and the only local place that used to carry a fair assortment closed down recently, leaving them with no good place to go. Lots of places online, but that's always a crap-shoot, and hearing from someone who's had a good experience is helpful in separating the wheat from the chaff.

1.) For safety, you will remove the jumper and repair it, right?

2.) The "eye" could be bad... did you jump the "eye" connections at the safety shutoff unit (indicating a bad "eye") or jump the line voltage across the unit, (which COULD mean a bad "eye" OR a bad a bad safety switch)?

I unpulgged the 2 wires on the terminals on the reset button. those 2 wires I jumped. I dont know about the eye. dident see anything on the web site about a eye, will look again.

ASSUMING your heater uses an eye (photocell) as a flame detector, the eye has high resistance when it's dark (no flame). When the flame lights, the resistance of the photocell drops dramatically and "signals" the safety shutdown unit that the flame is lit and all's well, so the safety control allows the heater to keep operating.

If the "eye" is dirty or has failed and doesn't signal the safety unit that the flame has lit, the safety unit "times out" after 30 or 40 seconds and shuts the heater down for safety's sake.

Of course, the "eye" MAY be good and the safety shutdown MAY have failed.

ANYHOW you'll want to repair the safety circuit, or someday the heater will fail to light and (with your wires "jumped"), continue to run and pump all the fuel in the tank into itself and eventually onto the floor (or WORSE)!

Thanks again Bob, mine has a round, maybe photo cell with wires on it stuck in a round opening right behind burner, near the spark plug, its about a inch away from the plug. Dont know maybe thats what it it. Maybe I'll post a pic of it. J
