6.2 chev diesel---fuel problem

I hooked a gravity feed direct to the injection pump and got the engine running. I had the outlet hose off of the lift pump and no fuel was comming out. I put the inlet into a gallon of fuel to eliminate the tank totally. Bought a new lift pump and installed it. Ran on gravity fuel for a few minutes and still no fuel out of lift pump. Is there a problem with the cams that would wear down the lobe? Advise please.

Possible - but not terribly likely. I replaced my pump and didn"t get it installed exactly right, and it didn"t work. Actually broke the cylinder that drives the pump off the cam, or whatever it was that drives it. It"s a real nasty place to work in there, and easy to not get it installed right. Also need to insure complete integrity of fuel line all the way back to the filter sock in the fuel tank. I had a pinhole in the intake line inside the tank. Sucked air, wouldn"t run. Took me a long while to find it. Especially frustrating is pulling that side mounted tank, and reinstalling same. Probably ought to replace rubber tube couplings with new ones, several inches longer than old, to provide some flexibility for easier install.

I've had some 6.2s apart with over 500K miles on them and never saw any wear on the fuel pump drive. Unlike most gas engines, the 6.2 cam is forged steel and not just Parkerized on the surface. But, I guess anything can break or wear out. I suspect you've either got the wrong pump, or somehow got it installed incorrectly. It's an awful job to get one in, since there's no sure way to hold that plunger-rod out of the way. All you can do it stick heavy grease on it and hope it stays out of the way. At least on SB gas engines, there's a way to jam a lock bolt in sideways against it.

If all else fails, you can just stick in a electric pump - just still it as close to the fuel tank as you can.
