J D L exhaust/muffler

Did John Deere make an exhaust for an L that has no "ears" on it to attach a muffler? If so how was a muffler attached?

My father worked for Deere and said they came to them new with a short piece of pipe in the manifold that was flattened on the outer end.

So did the piece of pipe screw into the exhaust manifold? I cannot see or feel and treads. Bill

Bill, I don't know which model your asking about. The unstyled Ls just had a piece of pipe that was flattened on one end and threaded on the other and did not have a muffler. The cast manifold outlet was threaded to accept the threaded end of the pipe. See the attached pic.
The styled Ls had a whole different setup with a muffler.
