calling Billy Shafer

I had a 25kw generator on a data room. It had an electronic governor on it. The rpms would go nuts when our equipment load had grown to a certain point. The resolution was to add "resistive load" such as an electric motor to the load and it would settle. We were running all electronic chassis. I had to design a resistive load bank for it to make the rpm's run steady. The load bank was basically a bunch of heating elements like you'd find in an oven. Now that is a lot of trouble for a generator that is not particularly cheap. It ran fine after that, but if I'd done the original project, I wished I'd had the opportunity to buy a different brand like a Cummins or Onan.

we got a used generac from a rental company sale and never had any problems with it. We used it probably 20-30 hours a week for 8 years. had a honda 5.5 in it so thats probably the source of reliability right there. I don't know if they used any other engines or not.

Some of the better brands. Not sure what size they may come in for all models. Kohler,Cummins/Onan,Winco,Pincor. Honda also makes some good units. Yanmar and Kubota also have some. The problem I have seen with Generac. Very cheaply made and sold for a cheap price. But then they make it back in the price of parts. No are very little help from the factory. They will not talk to you unless you are a dealer,no matter how bad you need the help. In my line of work we call them Genajunk. Very hard to get anyone to work on them. I had two in a movie company. One we never had any problem with. The other one we could not keep running. Ate control boards like candy.

Had to step out. I do not like the big box brands. They are also cheap and for the most part have no customer support. Most shops will not work on them because it is hard to get parts for them. I have one in my shop from Harbor Freight. Has five hours on it and no AC output. Been looking for parts for a year now. I have heard some good reports on Champion Generators. They do have a company backing them up. If you are going to buy one. Spend the money and get one that you can get repaird when the time comes.I know they cost money. But it is better than having a 500.00 dollar dust collector in the barn.
