I was wondering , why does a groundhog in Pa. tells the weather here in Iowa ?? or any other place ...
I just never have heard the reason ...

THANKS .. Mark

Well, If i was to guess anything, i'd say he's scared of movin. Cause ya see, here in NY i've killed quite a few of his relatives, In PA, he might be safer. I dont know about you but he ain't welcome on my farm. haha. Toby.

I think it is just a matter of convention. Actually they have one in Ontario called Wireton Willie,,,that the Canadians around here pay attention to.

So I suspect if some media organization in any given area got into the fun of having one nothing would really stop them. But since Pennsylvania got in on it frist, it will probably continue to capture national recognition.

1: A baseless superstition.

2: Television.

3: Persistent Promotion Puts Puxatawny Phil as Premiere groundhog Phenomenon. Pshaw.

4. Inertia. Television. Movies. Promotion. Inertia disguised as tradition.

Phil, obviously enough, is whatever marmot they can lay their hands on, not any particular one, as the hoopla has long exceeded the lifespan of those vegetable stealing vermin. Incidentally, they are not great barbecue, but my housemate wanted the vegetables back...one way or the other.

Years ago as groundhogs evolved they developed the ability to forecast the weather much the same as your local TV weather forecaster does.
No wait, he's wrong most of the time. Well, so much for that theory. ......

Lets see if I remember this right. Seems as how PETA has sent word to the PA bunch that has the pet groundhog forecaster that they are abusing him by waking him up and should return him to his natural habitat.

We have Shubenacadie Sam here in NS. Since we're in the Atlantic time zone, that makes Sam the "premiere" prognosicator, LOL

the peta folks were complaining about the groundhog being awakened was cruel treatment and suggested a robotic groundhog! wow they would REALLY hate how I greet a groundhog

It is called folk lore or wives tale etc. Doesn't matter since it is for a local area but the nation has forgot the finer parts of the folk lore. So do this and you will know what winter will do in your area. Walk out side and if you see your shadow then you have 6 more week of winter if not then you don't. A ground hog seeing his shadow is just an old wives tale and you know how those are

This reminds me of when 4 of us went fishing in Canada every summer. When we would arrive at the camp, we would look up an old Indian who worked there as a guide. We would ask him what the weather was going to be like for the week and he was always dead-on, as accurate as could be. Then one year we pulled in and asked him about the weather for the week and he said "Don't know". I asked him "How come you don't know? You've always been able to predict the weather so accurately.".
He said "Radio broke".

He's just as good as your TV weather guessers..........

I don't know all the little sayings, but I always predict based on the groundhog, "red sky at night/Red sky in morning", and if the moon is tipped pouring out water or holding it. Not quite sure I'd cut hay on it, but sometimes it seams the big buck TV folks do the same thing.
If Phil doesn't see his shadow tomorrow, I'll fill the rain barrels as the snow melts and put the goldfish back in

BTW, is it supposed to be sunny in PA tomorrow?

..... Why does he predict the weather in Iowa from Penn.? He's just that good! ha ha.
Yeah, ,I've shot plenty also (mostly for getting the forecast wrong) but many years ago I got between a chuck and his hole and ended up catching him by the scruff of the neck. Now that I had 'em, what to do with him.... I ended up letting him go in my bosses office while he was out. Good laughs, at least for me,the boss was always so timid about such things!
Anyway, the weather will be sunny, warm, and pleasant... always is!

Soma people call them Ground Hogs, Wood Chucks, & even Marmets. It's just what part of the country you are from.

THANKS for ALL that respond ... I get the feeling it's a hopeless case ... I will do like most said and .. go outside and see what the weather is doing ..

THANKS again , Mark
