OT: for dog lovers

One of the best stories I have ever read was McKinley Kantor's 1935 "The Voice of Bugle Ann"

A reader that loves dogs would certainly dig that one. IMHO

Yep, but her offspring carries on. It is a murder over fences and a dog. The good guys....well why spoil the story...: ) Leo

In Jr High, we had to read Where The Red Fern Grows. A good book about coon hounds. Chris

rrlund,

I agree. I read "Where the Red Fern Grows" a long time ago and nearly had to be locked in a rubber room at the end of the book because of the depression that was caused by the death of the dog.

I've read all of the James Herriot books and found them to be very enjoyable. However, I rented a bunch of DVDs of the BBC's series of Herriot stories and had to quit watching them after about half of them. They almost all resulted in pets dying.

I've killed plenty of animals during my lifetime. I've had greatly loved pets die. I get it. But, I don't choose to read/watch stuff that shows it.

Call me a wimp.

When I was little, we read Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" in school. We were assigned so much per night to read. I could see where the story was going and didn't want to get raked over the coals by taking two weeks to get there, so one evening, instead of watching the TV I read the entire rest of the story. At least I got it out of the way.

I hated the movie 'Old Yeller' for the same reason.
