Chevy diesel 6.5-no start

Perhaps you guys can help.

I just bought a 94 Chevy 3500 diesel truck cheap. The previous owner took it on trade and couldn't get it to start, and, not knowing anything about diesels, just wanted to dump it. Now, with the history out of the way:

-The glow plugs apear to work(at least a few of em), and upon cranking it, it'll smoke like heak and chug on a couple cylinders, though not enough to keep runnin.
-I've tried a spritz of ether, and it makes it stop chuggin until the ether is worked out of it.
-I've pointed a propane torch in the direction of the intake so it sucks in nice warm air, but with no results.
-I've replaced the PMD(fuel driver) with a known good one, with no results.
-There is fuel pressure, and also there is fuel pulses at the injectors.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I have a 93 #1 DO not use ether. mine had a big yellow sticker sayin not to use ether. i would check compression. check and make sure fuel return is open have you checked to make sure it is not aspirating air into the fuel system i had this problem a few months ago it would start and quit then i would have to crank several minutes to start rest of the day ok next morning same thing all over found a loose fuel connection it would bleed down. and air lock.

use an ohm meter and check them glow plugs for continuity at least that is quite simple and you dont have to remove them. no way see will start if there not working.throw that either can in the bush .check your fuel filter or replace it and bleed the system good.sometimes the module on the pump gives up and that needs replacing.

Either will crack the pre-combustion chambers or pistons. When my Chev 6.5L had problems I posted on Dieselplace.com. They were very helpful but they seem to think every diesel PU needs large exhaust pipe and a super chip.

Have you changed fuel filter and checked to see if lift pump is running(pumping)? Have you tried plugging in block heater?

I'm glad my 6.5L is now someone elses problem and I have a gasoline PU

You need all or nearly all the glow plugs to start. Best quick way to check em, unplug them and put your test light on a POS batt source and touch each plug spade. If it lights your good. Ether will also snap the nose off the starter.
