On U_Tube I saw them using a shotgun shell to start the tractor. Does the blast act against the piston or is there an air start device?

I saw how that works on a show on RFD not long ago,but can't remember exactly. I do know that it's a special shell and that you have to light a piece of paper on fire and put that in the right place too before you set off the charge. Wasn't just as simple as putting in a shotgun shell and hitting it with a hammer.

during ww2 early air planes had a starter that used a10 guage shell that was triggerd electrial the discharge went to a starter piston that turned a engagement dog that turned the engine about 1 1/2 turn . when you ran out of shell you cant prop. start them big radial engines .the electric starter were an inertia type that a small fly wheel would get wound up to about 3000 rpm then the dog to turn the engine would turn about 3 or 4 rpm . it had a place to hand crank the starter up to speed a nd then engage it to the engine it was a 4 mam crank i did crank a few R2800 when batterys ewere dead. (they usualy dont shut them off till they get back) old art USN AEM3C

That wick was like a glow plug to heat the chamber. It may be had a spark on it yet that set off the first fuel injected too.
