Long tractors

I have posted on this Long 900 that I reworked for a year. Still learning about this tractor and what I have found is its a good tractor. I have found several outlets to get parts, and have replaced allot of parts with command parts that are easy to replace. I would love to hear from someone who has or had one to ask some questions. I have been told that its a POS and everything else. I have learned over the years that you have to be smarter than what you are working on! I have used it for field and hay work this year and found that its very easy on fuel, uses no oil and is comfortable to run. What more could you ask for? I sometimes feel that this is the only one out there running, I know its not there are more out there somewhere. It seams there is allot of talk about JD IH CASE OLIVERS and the rest, But you never here much about others like the old Longs. Come on guys I know your out there and would love to hear from you. I have a 350 Long which I agree was bad mouthed as an orphan when I got it. Found part sources, and off the shelf stuff that would fit. A great tractor for raking, uses no fuel, has torque, always starts. Only complaint is the weak hydraulic system.

Would buy another in a heartbeat

I agree with you! If I could buy one new I would. This one only had 561 hours on it when I got it, so its almost new I guess. It a great tractor that I am using more than the others. My barn is colorfull, Long, Oliver, Case, A-C and Massey. They all have there good and bad points of there jobs they do, But all do there jobs well. I love the Long to plant with and hay work because you can let go of the steering wheel and it will stay strait and not wonder around. Its great to here that someone else likes the old Longs to. Thanks Bandit

nuthin wrong with Long's...i know alot of people that ran the snot out of them and tractor kept working...Long actually has a pretty good aftermarket supply.
some of these folks that gave me h*ll about my Mahindra locally...i'm usually the first one they call when they get stuck...i've pulled out about every color there is lmao...thing that makes me laff is i paid about 2/3 what they did and got a better tractor.

We had Leylands on our farm and we loved them. Everyone said they were the same as the Long. I can tell you they were not, but had some similarities, however I have not found a single part that would interchange.

A friend of mine had a Long and I enjoyed using it. We had JD, IH, Oliver, AC, Massey Harris and Ferguson, Ford, Case, Nuffield and Leyland.

We used the Leylands the most because they were easier on fuel, quieter, and just as comfortable as any other if not more so. I remember being picked on by the neighbor kids on the bus when coming home from school. My dad was using it to cut hay. They all laughed saying too bad you couldn't afford a real tractor. Of course I laughed at them when I pointed out our 3020 JD that was of about the same age and power sitting with a for sale sign on it.

I still have to say that I like all brands of tractors, and will never sell any of them short.

Long was identical to Leyland, in the same way John Deere is identical to Oliver: They were the same color. Leyland is British, Long is anything but.

I'm not sure about the Zetor tie-in- I was under the impression that early longs were made in Romania, and their successor is now something called a Universal. Later ones were rebadged Fiats. But I could be wrong- have been before, to hear the wife tell it.

Quite a few Longs sold around here in the '70's- many still pluggin' along. Like the SAME and Fiat, were looked down upon by the folks, but turned out to be pretty tough rigs.

In the '60's and maybe early '70's Longs were a rebadged Leyland. Good tractors. I have a pair of 610 longs that were built in Rumania and perform well.

1983 Long 360 here on the farm cost the least and works the hardest. Probably will start when nothing else will. Use it mostly for raking hay and has square baled alot in its day. The only complaint is the main drive clutch has been changed about 3 times. Splines in clutch center strip out. Will probably keep it till it is worn completely out.

Leylands were made by British Leyland in England . Longs were imported into N.Carolina and were made by several different European companies for Long- Zetor, UTB ,Landini were a few.

See there I knew there were other Long owners who liked there tractors. I Americanised this one, repainted it and rewired it. 561 hr on it when I got her, has a few more now. Good running very easy on fuel and comfortable to operate. This 900 is still like a new tractor. Every thing is still good and tight. Here is a picture of how she turned out. Hope you like. Bandit

I have a 360 and 445. Heavy, strong, and economical to run. They have some weak points, but don't they all?
