What is meant by Western

I saw an ad about a western tractor with a western hitch. What does this mean, and is it the same as another unknown term to me: "Wheatland"?

Jason, yes, the western hitch would also be called a wheatland. What that 'usually' means is no 3 point, and/or no pto. Just an oversized drawbar and 1 or 2 hydraulic ports. Greg
 
I imagine western tractor would just mean its been out west. Theres less rust problems and most of the time shedded. Its like buying a southern truck.
 
Wheatland or standards referred to tractors that pull equipment from the drawbar, as opposed to the row crop or "Farmall" types. The John Deere D & R's, 80, 820, 830, the Case L & LA's, and the Mccormick-IH W series were some of the examples. I think the IH W stands for wheatland. The newer series that started coming out in the '60's were somewhat less clearly defined.
 
Sometimes means different things to people depending on brand and location, but, the most common denominator would be wide fenders and a fully swinging drawbar from tire to tire which some people refer to as a bareback, meaning no three point hitch to limit drawbar swing.
 
as stated western stood for a tractor meant to pull big implements from the drawbar.my father bought a new case 1030 in 1970.it had non adjustable front axle 23.1 x30 rears.but also had 3 point hitch and pto.it sure wasnt row crop with 23.1 tires
 
Mostly right. Except every W series International I ever saw did in fact have PTO. A W6 pulling a pull type swather was a common sight as was a W4 pulling a sickle mower. Also lots of balers operated by W6's. W9 was clumsy enough that tillage was the main use. Other makes had similar variations. Western or Wheatland had wide tires, large fenders and only 3 point hitch as an add on. Hydraulics were an option. We had both W6's and M's as well as W4 and H. Each had its advantages. For a long day on a cultivator, disc or harrows the W series usually go the nod.
 
Yes to all except the comment on the location thing a couple things to add are no adjustable rear axles usually and no adjustable front axle in other words no row crop option I say usually later versions had rear axles because obviously it was cheaper to build them usually lower slung because they had wider rear tires and smaller diameters like 34" vs 38" those fat slugs would not comfortably go down a corn or bean row built for pulling wide ground engaging tools and covering many acres in a day. Wide fenders for heavy dust and believe me that"s important in the western plains either Canada or US. I"m sure they"re many other obvious differences that someone will expound on.
 
Most Wheatland tractors did have PTO. It's a rare one that didn't. (I'm from Wheatland country). Wheatland tractors did not have 3PT although the very, very odd one did. ( JD 620,630 for example but this was very, very rare.)
 
I'm a bettin your 1030 had an adjustable front axle but was a set back design.

The L,LA,500,600,900 and 930s were all chain drive and non adjustable axles front and rear. These were all considered to be "standard" tractors.

1966 Case came out with the 930/1030 gear drive with adjustable axles front and rear.
They used this design for both rowcrop and wheatland tractors.

Case called the rowcrops "General Purpose" tractors. They had a set forward front axle, narrow tires and narrow fenders.
The wheatlands they called "Western" tractors. They had a set back front axle, wide tires and wide full fenders.

Both designs had adjustable axles front and rear.
They also had 3 point hitch as an option.

To make more confusion, their 730/830 line always offered 3 versions. GP, Standard and Western Special with the Standard being a combination of the other two in that it was non adjustable axles and set back front axle of the Western design, but had row crop narrow fenders and a 3 point hitch.
