Mowing Tractor

This spring I want to buy a small tractor with a mower under. I have never had anything smaller on the farm than a SH. I think I can keep my lawn mowed, and my pastures clipped by running it in the highest setting.Ive looked at many on the web. It comes down to Farmall cubs As and Bs and Allis Bs and Cs.What have been your experiences with these machines and which would you choose Thanks ED

I have a S A that I mow with.I use a Woods belly mower and it had plenty of power. dont use a lot of gas either

You have about the same set up I am looking for. How high will it mow and what kind of job does it do on a lawn

I think it will mow quite high,I'm a long ways from home right now so cant measure, but it has been used for a brush hog before.I would guess it will cut a foot high, chops stones to I found out !!!!!

I used a cub with a 48" belly mower years ago. It did a fairly decent job on the lawn and I mowed pasture, but the 48" cut made it a slow go. It"s not much of a brush cutter.

My guess would be that the Farmall's would be easier to mount and dismount but I really like my Allis Chalmers B with the woods L59 mower. Dixie has a Craftsman 18 horse 42 inch cut and it takes twice the gas and twice as long to mow 4 acres of lawn.
I use the same mower to multch the pasture and hay fields/patches. Another 4 acres altogather.
I truck it up to the other palce and mow another 4 acres or so a few times a summer.

i have a cub with a 59 woods and also a farmall b with a 59. the cub is shy on power for that deck, in any long grass you'll mow in 1st. the farmall b plays with the 59, 2nd to 3rd gear, tho 3rd is pretty fast unless your on good flat ground. with what you are mowing, the allis b or c or farmall a or b are best choices.

Like Dick L, I mow with an AC B wherever and whenever I can in place of a lawnmower. The Woods belly mower does a fine job. I found a L306 (6') to replace my L59 (5'). I have the L59 for sale with brackets for AC B, Farmall A, and Ford 1720

I would look at/for one of the newer say 1960s cub lowboys. They have 3 point hitch on them and can have live PTO and hyds plus are more so set up to be an extra large lawn mower. Ya hard to beat one of the older F-cubs As for the Allis well not live any thing can be a real pain in the back sides

I do all my lawn mowing (1+ acres) with a Farmall Cub and a 60" belly mower. It's a bit low on power in second gear and high grass (1-foot+) but for normal lawn mowing it's a far better unit than a typical MTD-type unit with twice the Cub's nominal horsepower. Bear in mind it's a finish mower, not a brush hog, and you should do fine.

I agree with Rusty Farmall!! Put a woods mower on the SH and enjoy the power. Any thing smaller will at times be under powered!!! The money you would spend on a smaller tractor would pay for the mower and even have enough left to buy a good 3PTH. for the Super H if you want to go the 3 point hitch rout. Use it and enjoy. You won't regret using the Super H!!!!! Armand

We had a Farmall Cub low-boy for a lawn mower when I was a boy - with a belly mount IH 5' 3 blade rotary mower. It did a good job - for real heavy cutting an A or Super A may be better as they are alot more powerful than a cub . It would raise up to 8-10'' high - that would probably work for clipping pastures. I imagine a Woods mower would give similar results. The main advantage of the low-boy is much better clearance under tree branches than any of the other tractors you mentioned and also lighter -better on soft ground.

Any steep slopes? The B Farmall is low to the ground and more stable on slopes. The downside to a B is lack of power in heavy grass and a rough ride because of the smaller wheels.

The H is more tippy with the wheels narrowed for a mower but it has more power and a smoother ride. Both of them are as dependable as the day is long. Jim

I mow 90% of my yard with a SH with a 9 foot sickle mower. Hard to beat a 108 inch cut!Touch up with a 52 inch Cub Cadet. Sure I have to do it every 7 days but I get it done in about an hour.I'm cutting about 3800 sq ft in a minute.

Got a cub with a 42" belly mower and a 140 with a 6' rear woods mower. For mowing 4 acres the 140 is light years ahead of the cub.
