O/T Tell me I'm crazy

Big fan of Hustler mowers. Have six in our fleet at work. Bought the wife the homeowner grade for the yard. Built like a brick toilet house. Developed excessive pressure out of the oil fill tube and the vent on the crankcase pressure powered fuel pump spewed oil. After three tries they could not fix the problem. Did some research, found out these Briggs OHV engines have a bad habit of blowing head gaskets in the pushrod galley area. Called them back today to see if it was fixed yet (under warranty). The mechanic actually told me "It had a broken reed valve that we replaced!) I said "you must be thinking about somebody elses weedeater, this is a 4 stroke OHV Briggs and Stratton" He said "Nope, I'm talking about your mower" I've had a bunch of 2 stroke dirt bikes with reed valves, but a four stroke, no way! Is this some new technology or am I crazy?

Small 4-cycle engines typically have a reed valve or silicon rubber "umbrella valve" in the crankcase breather.

This lets air/blowby OUT of the crankcase as the piston(s) move down, and prevents air from re-entering as the piston(s) move up, creating a low vacuum ("depression") in the crankcase.

That's how the crankcase ventilation system works.

Here's a drawing of some Kohler crankcase ventilation read valves.

The Briggs works on the same principle, but, IIRC, is a sealed (crimped together) unit.

Here's a rather poor quality photo of what your Briggs breather looks like.

Bob can you by chance send me that picture you have of the alternator set up so I can pass it on the a guy on KS that is trying to figure out how to wire up his 9N.
Thanks

The jury is in, sounds like you are crazy. Want to borrow my straight jacket? I'm on leave from the cookoo's nest for a while so mine is available.

That's why I never ask anyone to "tell me I'm crazy"- because they usually do! :<)

If its any consolation, I (and about eleventeen hundred others on here, I bet) didn't know about the reed system, either.
