John Deere B

What makes a 1948 BW a BWH? I have never seen a B with 42 inch rears, except for the high crops. Every other B I have seen has 38s on the rear, even the wide fronts. Dad tells me the BWs all had 42s. Just curious, as our 1948 B has 42s on the rear, it used to be a wide front, it has a convertible front end (the tractor is a tricycle now, it works a lot better in row crop). We still have the wide front axle and single front wheel, if we ever want to switch to one or the other.

Its not that they came in a package, the tractor had the wide front on it when we got it, but we picked up the other front end types for it at auction sales and such.

Our 1936 B has 36" rears but they are cut down from steel. Also, it is my understanding that only the last year of B production (1952) had the pedestol that could be changed from wide to narrow front. I bet someone with more JD experiance then me will chime in with all the correct answers for you.

My 1937 BN has the single front wheel. Interchangeable pedestals were available just about as soon as the first tractor hit the field.

If you go to the Deere parts site you can look up the different tractor models, print out the pages and lay them side by side and you will be able to see every change between models and between different years.
