Battery Cables

that must be a gas, cause the diesel is 12v.i wouldnt go any thinner, as the + cable is quite long.

Usually you can't get the cables too heavy.
The exception is a 6V to 12V conversion that gains enough starter power to break drive cushion springs. In that situation, the smaller cable will often tame the starter down a bit to end the parts breakage.

Wire gauging follows these general rules.

The higher the voltage the lighter the wire.

The higher the amperage the heavier the wire.

The longer the wire the heavier the wire.

So a 6 volt starter requires heavier wire than a 12 volt starter.

An engine that requires a 1200 CCA battery will require heavier wire than an engine the uses a 650 CCA battery.

You CANNOT oversize wire, meaning bigger is better. If you think you can tame voltage or amperage by using smaller wire you will eventually burn something up. If you want to tame voltage or amperage use a smaller battery or a starter with a lighter draw. Using smaller wire creates heat in the wire.

Here ends the lesson.

I realized that I put that a 6 volt starter requires a heavier wire than a 12 volt starter. I said that wrong, what I meant is that 6 volt SYSTEM requires a heavier wire than a 12 volt system.

Just hate it when I make a mistake, where there are so many can read it. HA HA
