run like sh##.Everytime some one talks about my old Deeres. That's the first thing they say is I love the way it sounds as she comes down the drive.I'm not that old ,but have they not always had this nickname? When did the name come about can anyone date it?

I always called them Popping Johns in the '50 when I was a kid. I first drove a D when I was five years old. Of course the tractor was in first gear (only had three) and the throttle was set about half. Dad was on a drag putting weight on it and watching me like a hawk. I never worked a D under a heavy load very much, but spent many an hour on an R under a pretty good load. I loved the sound of those old tractors. The first time I drove a 4010, I was really disappointed in the sound. It just wasn't the same.

That Popping Johny name was from way back in the 30 if not the 20 because of the hit miss sound of the engine but they where not true hit miss engines. At idle they might hit then sort of not hit then hit again and that would cause the pop pop sound. Lots of people said when JD got rid of the pop they went down hill as for pulling and yep for the most part that was true for a few years.

We had a guy in the neighborhood back in the 30's and 40's who used to plow gardens with an L or LA.
I still hear that sound in my daydreams! Stuff like that led me into the rural life.

yup that is a sound that is almost extinct. nothing like being outside on a quiet evening and listening to the nieghbours j.d.that sound traved for miles. i can still hear it in my mind. my favorite was the J.D.D. they were quite plentyful as almost everyone had one since they were built for almost 30 years.and yes the name is fitting.... how else would you describe it?... it doesnt go MMMMMM thats the Mazda.if you dont believe in the poppin johnny, pop pop, or puff puff your not a J.D.fanatic.

We have a JD M and a Farmall C for old tractors, I wear hearing protection on the JD but not on the Farmall, they both have stock mufflers! I like the sound of an old JD, but at a distance!

my dad had 4 2cyd JD tractors I remember my brother picking corn with the JD A with a mounted corn picker . It was real muddy and the wagon behind the picker was full. SO he unhitched and told me to pull out the wagon with the M.F.135. No way! I almost got stuck, he said unhitch and get out of there, proceeded to back up to the full wagon hitched up to the wagon with the A and that heavy picker on it and popped it right out to high ground. It was not only an amazing sound but also an amazing tractor ! That was about 40 years ago and my brother still has that tractor , Its still popping away!!

Sometimes when you were trying to start them they would give off a loud pop or two. Provided entertainment for the Farmall guys. An A would out pull any Farmall H ever built but some of the A guys could hardly wait for the day they could afford a Farmall M. Ms were about $400 more than an A. But then, Oliver came along with their Super 88 and the A boys forgot all about Farmalls and started buying super 88s. Made the local John Deere dealer mad because we had to go "out of town" to buy an Oliver. The next town down the road had a cutthroat Oliver dealer who sold Olivers cheaper than Fords. The local John Deere dealer had no problem with our buying another brand as long as we bought "in the home town". We had them all-except Oliver.

If you would have put that much waight on the MF it would have pulled it out, and with a lot less noise!
I do like the sound of the old 2 lungers and would love to have the neighbors 51 A.
Still HP for HP They all pull the same under like conditions, ie. weight, traction, etc..

HUH!! I CAN"T HEAR YOU!!

You should wear hearing protection on the C too.

I always wore plugs for the Farmall M, the JD 1010 dozer, and the chainsaws, but not the "little" tractors. Now I have enough hearing loss to make me wish I had. I put way more hours on the C and Super C. Exposure time as well as noise level affects the amount of damage to your ears.

wow ,did you just punch a hole in my 40 year old story I dont have grandchildren yet but I wanted to tell them that story. What am I going to tell them now? lol
