unknow david brown

run away fast . if too late and You are Stuck with it , DO NOT USE ETHER , EVER , THATS IT PERIOD.... I know of at least 3 bad , ruined , or broken crankshafts in the terminal deadrow . ENGLAND engineered DB had only 3 main bearings instead of hearty AMERICAN built 5 Main bearing motors Case and other Well endowed Tractors That Fed the FREE and captive world without prejudice ... These American built tractors will last a lifetime ...

I dunno. I'm only guessing, but I'd assume that 1200a would imply a DB model 1200. Somewhere between 65 and 70 HP I think, depending on the age.
While I'm no fan of the Brown's three main engine, there's a lot of them out there that ran a LONG time. For every one that did snap a crank there's probably 5 more with 10K hours.
That said... there's a lot of things about those tractors that could rightly be considered queer by today's standards, or even from their day. Not bad tractors by any means, but no IH or Ford either in my opinion.
Biggest problem today would be parts sourcing as many things are starting to get scarce and some things require some afro engineering to keep them working.
To my way of thinking I'd want to give probably 2-3K less for a Brown 1200 over a Ford 5000... so in this area you're talking 4-5K for the brown. Actually, I'd probably want it cheaper than that....
It's one thing to play around with one but if you need an everyday worker, I'd suggest finding something else.

Funny, Perkins are designed and built in England and they were the largest diesel engine maker at one time. Over 15 million Perkins have been built. Very dependable long life engines. Dave

never been inside a perkins ,, just Run Them , and They RUN very well and Cheap too ,, , Are they a 3 main bearing engine ??? The DB is a fuel mizer.. And i must agree that for every bad crank , there are 5 out there that have delivered 10,000 hours

Been into a Perkins once, a good engine but I would consider IH, JD and Case all better built.
Perkins were used in many applications, fuel economy was good in some applicatios and not so good in others. Just take some time looking through the Nebraska tractor tests and see for yourself.
I certainly wouldn't be afraid of a Perkins, but I would take Belarus over a David Brown.

Ouch! I have a David Brown 880, 3 cyl. diesel and have to say it's quite a tractor and has a tremendous amount of power. True, it's be worth less than a Ford, Jd, or maybe a case, but only because parts are harder to come by. I can't even tell you how many hours are on mine, the meter stopped at 1412, but I guarantee it's over 5,000.

Perkins are good engines but they don't have the internal structure of a lot of their competitors either. I'll never forget the stack of Perkins rods I saw in a junk heap about a year ago... all from a 100 series Massey, all bent just below the wrist pin. Probably all from ether... It just struck me at the time that any Ford, Deere, IH, or Cat rod I'd ever seen had about twice the weight and cross section to it. Perkins used 'just enough' for normal conditions. Probably one reason why so many Ford's and IH's will take such a big twist of the torque screw and still live....

I'm gonna leave you alone with your Bel-A-Rus tho. I'd take 10 Browns over once of those leaking red pigs. Had one. Sold one. Never again.

thanks folks for the info.
any idea what size plow it can pull?
frind has a four bottom for sale sounds to large to me.

It should handle 4 16's well enough in light to medium soil. Get into heavy wet soil then 3 will probably be a challenge... Either way it's going to take correct ballasting and it's not going to pull it fast, but it will pull it.
