Gehl 250 spreader

I don't have a manual for the Gehl 250 manure spreader that I bought several years ago at a consignment auction,so I have to ask. The worm gear box that drives the apron runs from a 40 roller chain off the main drive shaft, just ahead of the beater gear box. It has been running on the small sprocket, but that's about shot. There's a larger sprocket ahead of it. I loostened the setscrews and slid it back and put the chain on that one. I don't THINK that acts as a coupler in the main drive line, but I'm not sure. If it is,it's probably slid back too far and I'm going to break it if I run anything too heavy through it. If that's the case, then the shaft should probably be pulled out the front and have the whole gear/coupler turned around instead. Does anybody know for sure before I break something? I don't want to pull that shaft if I don't have to. Don't wanna break it either.
