Big PTO horse

Cousin asked me to help him find a bigger horse for chopping corn. He is using 170 now and wants to be able to maintain more steady progress in heavy areas to be able to keep two trucks going. traction is rarely a problem, he would prefer 2 wheel drive. older is OK because he has three of the 170 horse tractors to fall back on. suggestions? All I see so far is Case 2590/94

good suggestions below. Also look at a IH 1466, Oliver 2255, JD 6030, MM G1355. Theres lots of options out there those are just a few.

Neighbor had a 2 wheel drive 4840 Deere. He said all that thing was good for was chopping,if that helps you out any.

What's he using for a chopper? At 170 horse I'd be carefull about just how much more power he's stuffing into it. Lot of the older machines like Deere 3970, Gehl 1060 and NH 900 only wanted ~200 HP.... and I'm fairly sure the Deere won't have the blower capacity to take much more crop anyway.

I'd be inclined to just give the pump a little twist and bring the Case up to 200 HP IF the thing is in good order AND he can keep it cool...

The chopper is the NH 900, he's looking to pretty much get the max out of it. I think that the Case would be a good possibility because it has the power shift as does the MF mentioned below. He's always stayed pretty much with Ford and NH but he said his mechanic suggested the Case so he is considering other colors now. There is an MF dealer not too far away who seems to do a pretty good business.

What's he got on it now? Ford?
I wouldn't wind that up any more...

Personally I'd steer clear of the Massey's unless he's going new enough to get something with a Sisu engine. 200 HP is too much for a 354 Perkins and I'd not want the V8...
Find something with some displacement like a Deere 466, IH 466 or the Case 504 engine.
The Ford 401 could probably be made to take it for a while until it melts a piston... or go way newer and get something like an 8870 or 8970 Genesis.

I tell you one tractor that was very impressive that I've seen for that was an IH5488 w/FWA turned up to 250hp I mean you had to run to keep up with it with a three row chopper in heavy corn. Bear in mind that was several years ago.
