When an axle breaks

When a tractor axle breaks is it usually dangerous or not dangerous for the operator? I don't recall hearing of anyone who was injured or killed from this.

If I ever "supe-up" my old 5020 it might be something to consider.

Broke one on 930 Case 3-4 years ago pulling 3pt Big Ox. Quite a letdown and sudden stop. Bent up fender and lost bunch hyd oil.

Father-in-law had a axle break on a Farmall 200 while driving it out of the barn. One heck of a letdown! son lost a wheel while in roadgear on a JD B running down a rural road - One heck of a letdown! Fortunately neither driver suffered lasting injuries! Don't care to think of axle breakage lightly..

I hear of guys putting massive detroit diesels on 5020 up to like 300 hp. If you ever break any thing on a beast like that...you will be doing something more dangerous than sup-ing it up.

Axle broke on my Zetor 7711. Factory service guy said caused by engaging differential lock when wheels turning. Heavy tractor, lots of traction. Axle twisted in two inside housing so the only thing happened was that tractor stopped moving.

Different ways they will break, never had it myself, Some if they break just rite, usually like under a mounted corn picker, the wheel will fall flat to the ground and if in that case that side was running say 2' lower than the oposite side then it could cause them to roll. Neighbor had one break this fall on Bigger newer JD with mounted chizel and dualls, just dropped enough the fender was supporting the tractor. Dualls stayed upright.

If the "axle housing" would break right after axle breaks--that would be very bad. Never heard of this happening.

I know axles have to be made of special, extra strong steel. Anyone know what kind of steel?

Chrome Moly, Chrome Vanadium?? Gun barrels are made from this type.

years ago local guy had axel break on 300 IH with torque small bolt of some kind went through his ankel, missed bone but he had to set there for 4 or 5 hours till someone came to bring gas. then wrecker took more time He wasn't hurt so bad but sure had plenty of time to stare at hood!!!

Do not know what kind of steel they use. Deere for the A series listed a replacement axle for use with the mounted corn picker but no way that I have found to identify them. I did run a 227 Mounted picker on a 51 A for years and took it slow on bumps. The axle under those situations would break at about in the outer bearing and not hurt the housing, Neighbor had a Deere A that the axle broke while cultivating corn with a 4 row front mount cultivator, just seen it from a distance of about a 1/8 mile and wheel was laying on ground. He had the wheel spacing wider for cultivating tho as he also had a mounted picker he used on it.

That I cannot believe. The only way a differential lock will enguage is if one wheel is spinning, if not then will not enguage. Something else caused it and just wanted to get around what actually caused it like probaly a bad part to start with so the company would not have to stand the repair bill.
