The floor slopes quite a bit... Is it wet? Mine has a problem with ground water. Hoping to have time to take care of it this year. Makes perfect beer/wine storage. Is it painted or whitewashed?

the floor is always damp it stays around 55 year round. alot of the plaster was letting loose , I took off the loose , did a scratch coat of portland and lime , then a finsh smooth coat with white cement. a year after that I had some white thoroseal left over from another job I was doing so Ipainted that on. It does not get water in there but it does stay damp, I dont know whwt the pockets are for maybe to keep butter and stuff in . I dont know how old it is.

I really dont know they were there when i reatored it. Somebody on this site might be able to tell us. It has cellar doors with stone steps going down to it and is copletely underground. there are 2 recessed pockets in the side of the stairway walls which i did not show on the pic

Just about every house older than 100 years old around here has one of these. Mine is under the barn. The holes aren't much more than an out of the way storage place for things rather than having them on the floor. In the cubby hole, the temps/moisture would be a little more constant also.
