Dodge Cummins

Brought a 94 Dodge 2500 diesel and have been reading the knowledge posts concerning diesel pick-ups on this site. Is there anything I should look out for and any maintenace tips. Thanks

If it was a 1993 or older, I'd tell you to add lube to the fuel (two stroke oil). But, I think 1994 is the first year of the big inline pump, and that thing is extremely durable. One injection pump for each cylinder, instead of one pump for six cylinders. Pump fuel as-is should be a non-issue.

Only thing you might want to check on is the 5.9 Cummins recall for the dowel pin falling out of the timing cover. I'm not sure what years the recall covered, but I know my 1992 was included.

DieselTruckResource.com is a good free site. Search Killer Dowel Pin. That may or may not ever happen but not hard to prevent. They are great trucks!

What is the dowell pin deal? Never heard of such but darn sure don't want to find out the hard way...94 2500. TIA

Find out when the valves were last adjusted.
Also when was injection timing last checked and set. Move the fuel plate up about 3/32 of an inch.
Then install a pyrometer. ou will just about double your torque with this one simple adjustment.
If you have 8 way power driver's seat oil the rails.
Remove rear outside bezel over latch and lube that. Lube latch pins and keepers.
When was the fuel filter changed? Check the position of the check valve on the air box. Check play in front end upper and lower ball joints.
These are common areas of maintenance.
The 12 valve CDT's are the best Dodge ever installed. Quit installing them Dec 98.

Have a 96 3500. Right after it went ot of warrenty. Developed a terrible oil leak on front of engine. Yup it as tha killer dowel pin that line up the timing cover. it had dropped out and rolled around on the gears till it caught and broke through the cover. Dealer said it had been a problem. Either hole was oversize or the dowel underdized. Was a costly repair. Asked the mechanic how prevent. He showed us that he took a sharp punch and after the new one was installed would hammer the punch on the engine right over the dowel causing a indentation over the dowel. got another 190,000 and still going.

i have a 94 2wd cummins, approaching 250,000 miles, all ive had to do is replace the water pump, starter, and steering box, the truck hauls trailers frequently, at least once a week, gets high 20's mpg, all the time, drops to around 17 with 18,000 hooked to it, just cant beat it especially with the junk they produce these days

Basic maintenance is really all you need to be concerned with on the engine other than the dowel pin thing. Change the fuel filter every 15K with a good quality filter and you should be good. Adding some oil to the fuel for lubricity doesn't hurt either.

Maybe , I sdhould do Some preventive upkeep maintenance , What Is your recommendations ??..my95 cummins has 308,000 miles,,, on its 4th fuelfilter ,2nd mechanical lift pump , same water pump , mastercylindar , clutch ,, valves, injectors ,and pump never been touched ,,will start easily in 5 degree temps if I do not plug it in , But I always try to give it a couple hours heat time before I start in normal plan of action on below freezing days...
