Hey guys:

I want to try to unhook the edge box on my lb7 truck, where do I unhook, rehook plugs at. This truck seems to be getting 13 mpg (I havent changed fuel filter yet). 2 Weeks ago I put in a front wheel hub assembly and I now seem to have a bad alternator and a low battery (according to advanced auto). I also have not diagnosed this engine noise for 1400 rpm up thats like a ticking sound that only goes away when you let off of the throttle. There was a post on here that told me some noise was normal, but this still doesnt sound quite right. Will a bad injector make the engine noiser or will the edge box make the engine noiser regardless of its setting? Just trying to get a little more insight before I dedcide to keep running truck or get rid of it. The fuel mileage is my main concern as diesel is 2.99/gallon.

Thanks

Guys, this sounds like a similar noise mine is making, but it does it all the time.

BTW, what is limp mode on the transmission? My truck does have a different exhaust and the programmer but that stuff was installed new 8000 miles and 10 months before I bought the truck so I dont think it could have been hurt too bad.

i have a 06 duramax i can notice a slight tick when its idleing it is very faint but seems to go away when i start to accelarate.mine has a utility bed full of tools a 251 miller welder a set of cutting torches with tanks.it weighs in at 10500 lbs i get a honest 14.5 to 15.5 mpg i drive 150 mile round trip to work and back 130 of the miles are interstate i drive 65nph most of the time i have 126000 some miles on it.i replace the passenger side front wheel assembly at 119000 some miles had the egr valve cleaned for 100 bucks and had to have some kind of air sensor replaced for 286 bucks. are you going by the computer for the mpg if so i would check it yourself a few times see what you are actually getting.these are the only problems i have had with this truck hope this helps RICK.

Believe it or not a bad cell in a battery will take out the alternator. The bad cell will create a "feed back" to the alternator and after a few days will smoke the alt. Had it happen to me twice, on 2 different trucks. The first time I had to buy the battery and the alt. The second time only cost me a battery because I new the simptoms.

What are the symptoms? Do you recommend a new battery on the bad one? The bad one was the one on the passenger side fender well. With a bad battery, wouldnt it be weak or hard starting? Its been real cold here the past 3 weeks or so and it starts fine in the single digits to teens without being plugged in.

The limp mode is designed to let you get the truck home if a problem happens in the tranny instead of it just shutting down.It might only be one gear.

Per GM information by service bulletins, the ticking noise is normal.
Bad battery, bad battery cables can cause all kinds of unusal problems. The computers will generally go to sleep at 9.0 volts, not operate properly when the voltage is low.

Ticking sounds that go away when you let off the throttle indicate an exhaust leak. You won't necessarily hear it at an idle, but when the engine gets going it will sound off.

Be sure both batteries are good. If one shows a bad cell, change both unless they are almost new.
I had an intermittent starting problem three years ago with my '01 F-250 Power stroke. The five year warranty had just run out. Replaced the cam sensor, and seemed to solve the problem. About two months later, on MLK day, we had no school, so I went out to take it down to replace the original five year old batteries. It would not start. The dealer picked it up, checked it out, and kept getting a low oil pressure reading, according to the codes. Some other codes were giving crazy reading. It had s/mgr & diesel mech stumped. I told him to go ahead & put new batteries in it. (his price was as good as any on quality batteries) He called me back in a couple of hours and said the new batteries had solved the problem. No problem since. I knew I was pushing the batteries, but they showed no sign of weakening. I'll probably change these out this fall. Just my two cents.

I fixed the electrical system by changing battery and installing new alternator, alternator was the problem as it was original. How about removing edge box, any good instructions? I have manufacturer shipping box but no instructions in it.

Thanks

Limp mode on my "02" with the Allison trans put the transmission in 3rd gear to get it home. It would do Park, reverse, and neutral just as normal. It would just go to 3rd gear when put into drive. 3rd is low enough to get moving if not working hard, and high enough to get down the road without getting run over. In my case, the problem was a switch on the side of the transmission (the one the shifter shaft goes thru). It was an east fix.

4010, I always thought the hot boxes added power and fuel economy. Never really understood that, but the 06 I have had a "Hypertech" tuner in it when I bought it. It gets the best mileage with it set on #2 (out of 3). Says it bumps it to 400HP+, feels like it too. Does yours have variable settings, or is it just a "get what you get"?

Cat engines will make a squeaky ticking noise that's not an exhaust leak. It's the valves and jake brakes being way out of adjustment.
