Just bought myself a Massey Ferguson 880 16 inch 6 bottom plow for my Massey 1155. Has anyone any advice on how best to prepare the tractor to pull this. Tractor has 20x38 tyres not ballasted. Should I get the tyres filled and or add rear wheel weights? Would nose weights help. New to this plowing game so any help or advice appreciated.
Thanks
Bill

I pulled 6x16's with a 120 HP 14,000 tractor with duals.

It was a load.

I had 800 lbs on the front and 900 lbs on the rear wheels.

So the tractor was about 12,000 without the weights or duals.

What HP and weight is a 1155?

I was using a 966 IH.

I pull the same plow now with MX 200 (175hp and 20,000lbs) and it plays with it.

You can go from there.

We assume a semi mounted plough? Sandy, loam or clay soil? Hills? Dry,damp or wet? radial or bias tires? R1 or R1W tread. What are typical winter temperatures?

Bill,
I pull my 5-18 880 semi mounted plow with a 4630 JD.
150 PTO hp
Base weight of 12,100 lbs.
I have about 600 lbs per rear wheel and 420 on the front, all cast iron, no fluid in the tires.
I do have a front fuel tank which would add some weight when full, nothing when empty.

I leave the land dual on when plowing. Of course I remove the furrow dual......

It handles the load really well.

A 5-18 will cut 6 inches less than a 6-16 so draft load would be similar.

Where did you find one? Toronto area or in the States?

Hi
Yes plow is semi mounted. Soil will be loam and will try for dry/damp conditions. Tyres are Firestone 20x38 radials R.with 90% tread. I would be plowing during the spring so temperature would be around 10 - 15 C. I think the plow can be reduced to a 5 bottom if it proves too much for my Massey.
