INTERNATIONAL 454 TRANS PROBLEM

I have an International 454 that grinds going into 3 gear both hi and low ranges. Do I have to separate the tractor to get to the trans gears out or can they be taken out the top or side of the trans case without spliting the tractor? The PTO clutch is made to be removed through the side of the trans case so you do not have to split the tractor for repair of that issue. The speed gears are right behind the PTO clutch assy. Any help would be great. Thanks Michael
