My Daughter lives in a small house on our properity with her family. The house is very old indoor plumbing was installed in the 50's. The cast iron pipe used back then is in bad shape. I repace sections with plastic as it gets bad. Today the 30 ft main line to the ceptic tank was done. It never fails I make at least three trips to town until I have everything. Today was no exception. I am fortinute I need to travel only about three miles to Home Depot. How far do some of you need to travel a hardware store? Stan

To the main square of town is 7 miles but that only get you to the court house which is no go for any thing but costing you $$$. Auto parts store about 1/4 mile less and any place other then that add 1-3 miles. Now I do have a lumber yard/hardware store about 4 miles from me and up till a couple years ago had one 3 miles but the Ice storm get that place and it fall down and the guys insurance screwed him up down and side ways

8 miles if I go to Wally word, Rural King, or one of the local lumber yard. True value is 12 miles. Closest Home Depot is 25.

The nearest Lowes, Home Depot or Menards is 171 miles. 30 miles will make it to Runnings or a lumber store that has a good selection of lumber. Usually if I call around one of the neighbors has something I can make work. I then replace it on my next trip to Bismarck ND, Rapid City SD or Miles City MT, depending on what direction I want to drive 171 miles.

2-1/2 miles for basics such as bread, milk, movies, church, pub, fuel and hockey.
12 miles south or 22 miles north for anything major such a schools or small time hospitals.
50 miles east for a Home Despair, TacoBell, courts, government offices and specialty stores.
Go 5 miles west and your vehicle stall due to being flooded.

"Town" is 12 miles away. Small place with a small hardware/grocery store combined. 60 miles in either direction there are somewhat larger towns with decent sized stores and just about everything i could want.

7, A lady friend of mine gave me a tip one time that has saved me a few trips. Always buy every thing and anything that you possibly may need to complete the job. Extra corners, straight splices, any thing, then save the sales slip and next time your in town return the extra pieces.
I usually offer to restock the items and some times they agree. ;o}

its 50 miles round trip to the nearest wide spot in the road...200 miles rt to nearest city of any size...thats still too damm close.

Great hardware store and lumber yard is about 2.3-3 miles from me. Its about all there is there except high priced soda and watery gas. The main town, of about 9000 is 6 miles the other way. Its got Walmart, decent gas, Kroger, and farm supplies. Give or take 40 miles east or west gets you into a major urban area.

Home Depot 4 miles--center of nearest town(9600 people) 6 miles. Nearest place any bigger is 35 miles. Still plenty crowded for me.
Paul

6 miles west to county seat with 3 lumber yards, 3 hardware stores, 4 auto parts stores and JD dealer. 30 miles west to city with Lowes, Home Depot, ETC. If I go 60 miles east and can cross Lake Huron with out sinking I run into Buick and Deere.

Jerry

We're about 3 miles out of town to the high priced Hardware stores. Closest Farm and Fleet is 50 miles south as are other good shopping opportunities including a Menards. There's a Wally World in town but I don't like supporting the Chinese much so I try to avoid the place.

7 miles to groceries. 5 miles to gas. 8 miles to town. 12 miles to Home depot, 13 to lowes. No lumber yards left, the big guys killed them off.

18 miles to an Ace, The one that gets me is almost 40 miles to the nearest equipment dealer (both IH or Deere) for breakdowns. Both distances one way.

got more towns than you can shake a stick at within 20 miles....
We live kinda in the boonies (in a small town) but are 10-15 minutes to just about anything we need including work. Bakeries, butcher/deli, beer, resteraunt (several) within a mile.

Dave

4 miles to a good hardware store that will hopefully stay open. 30 miles to city of 50,000, within 40 miles we have 11-12 tractor dealers. As livestock diminish, we lose dealers.

5 miles to a town of 15,000; 35 miles to a college town of 45,000. The local hardware & lumber stores are so high prices so many drive the 35 miles to the box stores.....

Local town is down to a satellite JD dealership & a NH partsplace/Kubota dealer. Use to have Allis & IHC & Oliver.

Got a Ford car dealer, All-combined Chrysler/Jeep dealer (of late combined), and the GMC issues are hard to sort out - Pontiac. Buick, Caddy in one, and the Chevy dealer has been dead for 1/2 a year. No idea what will be saved from all that, would make sense to make a Buick/Chevy dealer out of the 2, but I won't hold my breath.

community general store within a half mile, buy small amounts there just to support a local store. for larger amounts, 10 miles.

1 mile to overpriced groceries. Little more than that to good hardware store probly two miles for lumber. Make that trip every day. 18 miles to less overpriced groceries and a movie theatre etc- in the town of 7000. Twice a month. 50 ish to nearest town over 50k, HD, Lowes, Costco etc. About five times a year.

Ben

20 miles if I go west where I can get everything, 15 miles if I go east where I can get most things.

Both of 'em too close as far as I'm concerned.

8 miles to everything a fellow could need - and I get to sit down both ways. I go about once a week but thats way too much. theres something to be said for solitary confinement!

12 miles to a hardware store. I live 3 miles from the nearest town, but the only thing left is the restaurant, bank, post office, and elevator

My property line is also the "city limits" of a small town. We can almost throw a rock and hit the nearest hardware store. Unfortunately it's not a real good one. Kroger store just 10 minutes out. Rumor has it we get a Walmart in the next year.

Big city is about 20 miles away. They have pretty much everything (good AND bad)

3 Deere dealers with-in 30 minute drive, one less than 5 minutes away. MF/AGCO dealer about 30 minutes, CaseIH about 45, and New Holland about 45 minutes away. Good feed mill/co-op about 30 minutes away.

No you and your fellow citizens closed up the store by not keeping on doing business with them.Last I heard Lowes,Walmart etc couldn't force anyone to their store

"high priced soda and watery gas" That sounds a lot like the Casey's General stores in small towns around here.

Our local hardware store was going to sell to Rite Aid, fell through because of the economy. He closed his lawn mower repair section in anticipation of closing. Now that he's still running the hardware store w/o the mower business everything is 10-20% higher.
To answer the thread, 30 miles to box stores in opposite directions. But, I never start a plumbing project w/o the local place being open.
That being said I can save enough going out of town to more than pay for the gas and put money back in my pocket.
The local grocery store is like a big 7-11, has reduced sized products w/ higher prices.
I spend my income on the best value and the mom and pops should at least act competitive.

1 mile to Gas Station
5 miles to Ace Hardware
9 miles to NAPA
12 miles to Wally World
21 miles to Home Depot and Lowes
63 miles to my day job

I live in town. Usually have one tractor down here from my land up North. In warmer months I drive it all over, McDonalds drive Thru 1 mi. Bobby and Steve's gas station to get a soda pop 4 blocks, Hardware store 1/2 mile, Beer store 3/4 mile, Catholic Church about 6 blocks, welding store about 8 blocks, movie theater 4 blocks, Dairy Queen 4 blocks, major engine rebuilder (Wagomen Bros.) 1/2 mi.
I'm about 4 miles from 2 different Home Depots and a Menards, 4 miles from 3 major steel yards, within 2 miles from two major grocery chains, 2 miles from Target, 2 miles from Wal Mart. Well you get the picture.

Small town with minimal services is 17 miles north,Mega city starts at 17 miles south. We try to schedule needs with necessaty shopping. Some times it works.

1 mile to town,gas,food.auto parts,most things.
56 miles to work,big city,everything there.
7-8 years till retirement(I hope)
and it aint gettin no easier.

6 mi to 3,ooo pop. town good hardware store.McDonalds, and gas. 28 to 8,000 pop Wallmart, Lowes, Kubota,Ford NH, AC, Massey dinky JD and all cars.38 miles to 400,000 Pop Major League Football, concerts, NASCAR, GrandOle Opry and the entire gamit. 2 months into this retirement thing and I think it is going to work out fine.

3 blocks to hardware store, 2 blocks to grocery store, 2 blocks to post office, 8 blocks to hospital! Greg in the heart of Omaha Nebraska

I live in a town of 3500, have everything I need right here . The farm was a different story, it was 6 miles to the town of Hensall and three to the village of Zurich. The Coop mill was in Zurich along with a Rona so when I was at the farm and needed something , or a load of feed I always went to Zurich..not much of a haul either way.

Stan, just the other day I was telling a friend that when I went to high School I used to work the summers for an electricl/plumbing contractor. The owner took the time to show me how to do a joint in a cast pipe, using the hemp rope and lead, making a couple of"pours and then driving the lead and hemp in tight and making a finish pour and chiseling the pou smooth with inside and outside chisels..an absolute lost art..everybody rips old cast out and puts in plastic DWV

18 miles to the closest lowes store. Menards is 20. Might as well travel the extra 4 miles past the hardware store to get what I need and not get hit on price.

When I go to town I buy lots of extras for projects to have on hand for when its 10 below on xmas morning and no one is open. I usually get most projects done with one trip to town and 3 trips to the spare parts bin.

5 to 6 miles, depending on where you want to go in town. We have a Walmart now (avoid it as much as possable), Ace hardware, NAPA, CarQuest, etc. Ladysmith, population 3800 +/-, is the county seat, and the only "city" in the county. Neighboring towns ("towns" is being generous...realy only villages)both have better lumber yards, and the one has a pretty decent hardware selection, too. (actually closer to my place too - about 4 miles) Have to go 15 miles to the nearest JD dealer, 45 for NH dealer, Farm & Fleet, Menards, and a rather poor mall. Anything bigger/better, it's 60-65 miles away.

I have a small hardware store that never has what I need but always has something I can make do with that is 7 miles away. Seems like stuff always break a noon on Saturdays, just when they close. Rural King is 18 miles, Lowes about 23. Beer is only 8 so I ain't as far out in the sticks as I thought.

Dave

One mile from town and I'm in the town limits. Probably 2 miles to Home Depot. My property line
butts up to the county line. Hal

Just a mile. As a rule,I don't even keep a whole lot of new bolts and such around. Auto parts store is right next door to it. I farm right up inside the village limits on the west and north sides of town. Best time in life was when the wife worked at the local hospital. We can see the place from the kitchen window when the leaves are off the trees. Didn't take her long to get to work.

That's the big thing I noticed around here are real limited hours of operation. Hours of operation is just a sign to read while standing at a locked door, nothing to do with when they're actually there.

Four miles to a Super Walmart, five to the nearest Orscheln's. Beyond that, within 30 miles there are five Super Walmarts, three Oerscheln's, three Menards, two Home Depots, one Lowes, four NAPAs, seven O'Reillys, and lots of smaller independent hardware, auto supply, and lumber stores.

The flip side is, I once had a fellow work for me who had a daughter and son-in-law who ranched out by Valentine, Nebraska. The closest place to their house on the ranch where they could buy a hamburger was 42 miles.

6 miles to Home Depot, a good plumbing and electrical supply store, NAPA and Ace Hardware. But I built up a pretty good supply of pipe fittings, electrical stuff, bolts, etc., when we used to live 25 miles out. Would figure out everything I might need, to avoid a second trip.

3 miles to town of less than 2000. Grocery store and local lumber yard/hardware store. Extremely expensive thought. About 5 minutes

25 miles to town of maybe 10,000, one fast food place, no chain store. About 25 minutes

40 miles to a Home Depot and Walmart. About 35 minutes

60 miles to the Mall. Just under an hour.

lol...........you know you are rural when you measure distance in time!! I had to actually thing of the mileage and they are guesses.

A little over five hours drive to the next town with winter driving. I can drive it in a little over four hours in summer driving. I live in remote Yukon Canada. Gerald

Hey, I resemble that remark! Our ranch turnoff is 36 miles from Valentine NE. The town of Thedford is a bit closer to us('bout 5 miles closer) but only "stores" there are a privately owned lumberyard/hardware and a grocery store, both of which are usually higher priced than Valentine. Valentine, pop 2800(SALUTE!!!) has quite a bit more as far as stores(Bomgaars, Mickey D's, 3 big grocery stores, etc.

We're about an hour and a half from the closest Menards, Wal-Mart, etc in North Platte.

Home Cheapo, and Lowes 14 miles north or south, as well as Hannaford, Pricechopper and anything else ya need. Hardware store 8 miles, was bought a few years back by a company called Stock Building, well they couldent cut it so the original owners took it over again. We used to call it Otta-stock since they dident stock hardly anything. J

Im reading theas replies and i just realized im a real hill billy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Im 85 miles from one town to the east and a hundred miles to the west,,,,,,,,,,,,,,There are some small towns in between but dont have much other than food and beer,,,,)

50 miles N. to a nice Lowes, T S C & 2 super centers { China-Mart } A so-so J D dealer & Atwoods. South 35 mi. to a nice Lowes , TSC, Atwoods, good hardware/ lumberstore,J D & AGGO also. 75 mi. to good machine shop & radiator shop.
7mi. to new China-Mart . Drive by it to a good local hardware, auto parts ,lumber yd & NAPA. stores . I feel good every time I drive by the new China-mart. Happy to pay more at the local places. They treat me like a customer.

35 miles North to Walmart, Tsc, BUT I can go 35 Miles South to Walmart, Tsc, John Deere, Case, New Holland, Autozone, Oreillys. SOuth is a smaller town than North. Like dealing with folks south better.

Well, it was meant as fiqure of speech! But youre right. I very seldom go in any big box storeto start with, but now I have no choice other than driving 20 miles to a "regular" hardware store!

Probably 25 minute drive to HD depends which direction I go.6 miles to local gas station, coffee shop, convience store.Hardware ,auto parts 10 miles.1/2 mile to the local farmers shop to borrow bolts etc.If you need it what difference does the mileage and time make.

Vito

11.7 miles to town, but seems like a lot further when you need something and then need to get it back home to finish the job. Most usually the wife is nice enough to do the running, if I am nice to her.

My stash is my hardware store. Nine times out of ten I have what I need on hand. Sure feels good. Specially the part about not putting out green. People who have worked on or in my house in 26 years, you could count on one hand. Doesn't mean I do the best work but it is satisfying. Same with 54 ford and 91 cad, but my time is running out. God bless and be careful. Dave
