Tire Pressure in winter

I need to go on a fairly long trip tomorrow so I checked the tires for air pressure. These tires are kept at 32 psi all summer and never leak. Today each tire is at 30 psi. Is that due to the cold and will the they go up to 32 again when they warm up on the road ? Todays temperature is about 20° Fahrenheit.

yeah, but race cars use nitrogen gas, not air (20% oxygen), that"s why race car tires don"t change air pressure that much, even a 1/10 of a psi can make a difference to a race car at 200mph.

Tires are to be checked cold, do not check them again hot it will just screw with your head. BTW tires haven t used the 32psi standard in 25 years, check the door psi label for ride, check the tire psi(sidewall) for wear.

Tire pressure changes one pound for every 10 degree change in temperature. So if they were 32# at 60 degrees they would be 30# at 40 degrees. Add air to bring them up to recommended pressure. Also do as 504 said and check what your vehicle pressure is supposed to be, not what the tire says.

I would assume that your 1 lb for each 10 deg. is used as "a rule of thumb" and that the difference might be more or less depending on the size of the tire? eg: a tiny 13" tire on a sub-compact as opposed to a 17" tire on a large pickup. I don"t know; it just seems there would be a difference?
