As Time Goes By

Was watching the news last Wed. (1-6) here in SW OH, weatherman said we were gonna get some snow. They showed a store with empty shelves, where people drove their 4-wheel drive SUV"s to the store to stock up.
You woulda thought doomsday was coming. We got 4" of snow. To me 4" is little more than a nuisance. Would rather drive in 4" at times, than a 1/2".
Guess its cause the media makes it seem worse than it really is. I remember we got a foot in "50. "Course then we didn"t have radar, etc.

It is a bit different today. We live in central MN and years ago if you had 6 inches of snow you may have to wait a week to get plowed out.

Around the first of the year we had 18 inches of snow and we were plowed out the same day.

Most of the media has lost all credibility with me. Think about all the BS that has been spewed out of the mouths of these media types:
Bird flu, pig flu, real bad weather-heavy rain-heavy snow, cold temps
etc.
I remember in the late 80's it didnt get over 0F for weeks at a time in SE Michigan.
Then all the Medical discoveries that Pi** me off, like: Hot dogs cause cancer, Prostate cancer is prevented by drinking "X". The reporters are not doctors.

Im in SE Indiana and see the same TV you do - I agree the weather broadcasting has just gone nuts, same scare over and over all channels. When traveling in New Mexico a few years saw my kind of weather - guy says - well nothing today, probably going to rain next month.

My Wife and I were talking recently how in the sixties our parents bought so much less at the store. If we were snowed in for a week there were plenty of canned veggies in the basement along with a sack or two of potatoes, frozen beef and venison in freezer, plenty of flour to make bread, and just two hundred yards to the neighbors to get milk. I do admit that the two miles uphill both ways to go to school was unpleasant in two feet of snow.

That just gets to me more and more. My Dad was transportation supervisor for the local school distict. He and my mother both drove bus. Early in the morning,if the weather was REALLY bad,the superintendant would call and he and Dad would discuss it for quite a while before they would cancel school. Now,honest to God,they don't even wait. I've seen days when all it did was RAIN,but the forcast was for snow, and the wimps that run things now cancelled school the night before. We had a piddling 4 inches the other night,no blowing,no drifting, just straight down 4 inches of new snow,no school. There are folks around here yet who say they can remember Dad laying the bus right up on its side bucking through drifts and he just kept going. I think so many people are convinced that it should be warm enough by now that we shouldn't even be having winter anymore, that they just dont even mentally prepair for it anymore.

I think the main weather guy on one of our local TV stations is either a hopeless narcissist or he owns the station. The weather report typically takes up as much time as the entire rest of the news.

That guy can take 15 minutes to say, "It might rain tonight, and then again it might not". He always throws so much "scare" into his forecasts, no one believes him anymore, just like the kid who cried "Wolf" too many times.

If all the other forecasters are calling for a low of -10 degrees, he says -15. If others are forecasting flurries to 2 inches of snow, he runs on about the "real serious storm front that is moving in". You get the picture. I agree. It's gotten out of control.

I usually just go to "weather.com" on my computer and pick the local up from the Weather Channel. That's usually the most accurate and sane.

Glad to see you guys see it as I do. Think some of our forecasters come here from N.C. or somewhere south where an inch of snow causes havoc.

You can tell most of the national broadcasting services have their headquarters in New York city. I always get laugh when they predict 6 inches of snow and 0 degree tempratures for NYC and it sounds like the coming of the next ice age. But the same weather system was in the midwest 2 days before with 30 inches of snow and -25 temps and nobody even noticed it.

The reason those "wimps" cancel early is for fear of the lawsuit from some parent who couldn't drive a matchbox school bus in the snow. Someday maybe the "regulars" will be up in arms and end this litigious nonsense.

I think it's ok to close the schools on any little threat. Why not? There is many times more traffic on the roads and people are in more of a hurry and they are talking on cell phone not paying as close of attention. So much more likely to come upon a stopped school bus and not be able to stop in time. And these are in the best of driving conditions let alone if there is a little weather concern. Why take a chance just for a few hours of school that can easily be made up?

It's pretty bad when I trust the dopers I chased, more than the weather guy... At least I knew the doper was gonna lie. But, I could get him to tell the truth at least to the point it was usable. The weather man (and most news media) like to build it up, and make it worse. Guess it sells advertising somehow. Maybe because they know we are gonna tune in anyway, whether we believe them or not...
