Amish Heaters

Does anyone have information on the Amish heaters that are shown on TV. Has anyone purchased one?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Far as I know my $30 Wally World electric heater produces 3.41 BTU/W and the $200 to $400 Eden Pure or Amish Heaters produce 3.41 BTU/W (if my numbers are right, workin on memory here NOT specs) so I dont see a reason to spend the extra few hundred bucks. Those 120 volt plug in heaters typically consume say in the neighborhood of 1500 watts REGARDLESS if a $30 Wally World or $200 Amish and that electrical energy gets converted to X BTU of heat energy in our homes.

Thats just my opinion and all are entitled to their own opinions so its your money go n spend it as you please.

A true rip off in any sence of the word.

I have friends that purchased them, and are indeed impressed --- BUT THOSE ARE MY STUPID FRIENDS. Look in the arkives, there are lots of posts on this explaing that a watt is a watt even if you have a horse, and straw hat.

Take no more than $15.00 to Wally World and get a 110 volt heater--usually 1500 watts----the max you can get out of that outlet in your house. The Amish can't do better, even if it is made in amish town china.

Same btu's of heat as any other 1500W heater.
They can save $$$ if you turn the house stat down to 50F. Then stand or sit beside one of these heaters all day.

If what you're after is an immitation fireplace with a heater, you can get one alot cheaper at most farm & home or home improvement stores and won't have to pay for the advetising.

I have a Dimplex pedestal style in the family room and it gets used pretty regularly.VERY realistic flames and can use it with or without the heater.

They are a overpriced piece of junk simple as that. It may heat a small room but the rest of your house will be cold. The point is you drag it to the room you are in to keep warm. I have a couple friends that bought them and the electricity goes up just as much as the money saved on the LP bill so they gained nothing except paid 325.00 for a 20.00 heater.

I have dealt with quite a few Amish farmers.
The Amish heaters advertised a such a ripoff
that I do not believe they are made by the Amish.
They are just another commercial scam.

Figure all they are is a ceramic heater with an amish cabinet wrapped around them. Like others said $10-30 most anywhere.
I just bought a 220 heater for $179. Bout a foot square box with a grate in the front and back, heat coil and fan in it and a couple switches on it.

really you can watch the in FU mercial and see that it is a scam. The amish guys pushing hand planes on finished wood, holding a big woodlevel on a top of one, sliding the "heater" part into the wood box over and over etc is pure stupidity. Anyone that can watch that and not see what a con this is, must not know how to do anything themselves. the dumb ***ks acting in the comecrial sure don't.

That is correct! The Amish can't use an electric heater in their homes, as there is no electric connection to the normal power grid.
I once went to a friends farm for a sausage making day.
There were two Amish men there to do the hog killings, and make the sausage. they hauled in a large meat grinder powered by a single cylinder gasoline, or maybe diesel powered engine, and they used that to grind up the meat.
Those so-called Amish heaater ads, show that heater without a wire and plug, in the advertising. It is a form of misleading advertising, and gullible folks fall for it.
The first ads, a few years back, implied that you could use those heaters with no electricity, just roll it from room to room, and let it heat it up. The picture of the dancing flames on the front fooled some folks.
This year, in the latest advertising, (today's Sunday paper) show how it heats, how much current it uses, how much it will cost to run it, and really shows just how folks got taken in years passed.
Like old P.T.Barnum said---Oh, i'm sure you folks know what he said about a sucker being born every minute----?

Here's the clue: if it is on an infomercial, it is either junk, way over priced, or a lot of both.
The infomercials also scam you on things called "Processing & Shipping charges". If you notice on most commercials, it does not state what these charges are. In many cases, those charges pay for all of the item and cost, the "$19.95" is mostly profit. They almost always start with "one" and then "double" or "triple" the offer. That means that it is worth about 1/10 of what they are charging. Does the word S C A M mean anything?
I was scanning channels and one of the well known TV shopping channels was pushing the Amish Heaters. They had a guy on there helping sell that claimed he visited the "Amish Shops" where these are all "hand made". he said, "They all keep a red rag in their back pockets because they hand polish each unit." Who would believe this BS?
It is nothing more than real wood, mass produced, with a cheap 1,500 watt ceramic heater and the fake flames.
They are making a killing off of these.
It finished my negative opinion of these TV shopping crooks.
If you listen for a while, EVERY darned thing they show is their "favorite", they "love, love, love it" (must be some crazy drama that women like to hear?) and any color that you happen to pick and call in is their "absolute favorite".
It is shamful that the greatest nation on Earth has so many stupid and misinformed buyers.
The fleecing of America continues in the name of keeping companies in business.

One such item I investigated was simply a 1500W electric heater, built w/3 tubular quartz bulbs,as used in floodlights, enclosed in a heavy copper sheet metal shell to more evenly disipate the heat produced. The bulbs were controlled by a thermostat(thermal limiter).
Ie:when heater was ON,bulbs radiation(heat)brought copper(heat sink)up to set temp, then cycled off, until copper radiated off the heat, restarting the warming cycle. The copper shell smoothed out the surges that would be present in a nichrome wire element by providing a much larger radiating surface with a longer "cooldown" time vs wire elements.
This being simply a radiant heats w/o a fan, when it cycled"off" it did not draw the few milliamps more that a fan/wire took, however IMHO the radiant heater thereby had less circulating power in a given area,so without a ceiling fan or such in larger room, principal comfort zone would be limited to immediate area of heater, depending on room's heat loss logistics.
In short,IMHO,an electric heater IS an electric heater IS an electric heater....the copper plate/quartz bulb heaters are nothing magic, just a variation on the oil filled electric heaters which use the enclosed oil as a heat sink also,to more evenly dissipate the heat.
This is my opinion ONLY.I have no documents stating I'm smart, just been thru Seen That and Common Sense courses in life :)

Just watched a segment on space heaters on one of the national tv morning shows a couple days ago. They said the cabinets from those amish heaters were made in China. (surprise!) And they were no more efficient than a cheap electric heater.
In other words: Rip Off!

My grandmother got one of the eden pure heaters a few years ago to break the chil up stairs on really cold days till the gas heater downstairs could get cought up. It does a really nice job of heating up the live'n room, dinning room, and kitchen area and she has seen no noticable change in her electric bill.

Dave

And remember, there is a LIMIT of 2 per household...!!!

Maybe the Amish deliver them with their team and wagon..!!!

Ron..

"she has seen no noticable change in her electric bill."

WOW!

Some folks REALLY like to believe, don't they!

oh yeah ain't that a hoot to see that guy going around the corner of the barn and up the hill with one on his horse drawn wagon. Where in the heck is he going? to deliver it to someone that just called in for one?? You know after a few suds that infomercial is worth a lot in comedy, really funnier than most sitcoms. To see them idiots all standing around staring at the stupid made in china pressboard cabinet like they are doing brain surgery, and the morons with their ancient tools that just obviously don't know what they are for. And the testimony from people that can barely read the que card in front of them and their idiotic comments..all laughable.

An electric heater can save you money, if you use it right.

Turn your furnace heater down, and use the electric to heat one or 2 rooms you live in. Cuts your fuel bill, but does raise your electric bill.

Any electric heater that puts out 1500watts is the same as any other electric heater that puts out 1500watts. From the $17 milkhouse heaters, tot he $400 highly advertized ones. All the same.

I got a $40 basboard looking metal one, it works like above, works as good as an Eden Pure, works better than the fake Amish ones. But you trade electric bills for fuel bill, you need to use it to warm one area, as you lower the thermostat & save fuel bill on more of the house.

The Eden Pure and others that look and are priced like it are terribly overpriced, don't work any better, and don't live up to the savings claims. They look nice. Way overpriced.

The Amish ones are a real ripoff. My bortherinlaw bought 2 because they were free you know, and he falls for that gimick stuff. They are way to costly, made terrible cheap, look plastic/cheap, and don't really put off much heat. Total ripoff. Poor product, poor advertising lies.

Local box stores or lumber yards or hardware stores have some nice ones for $40-80 that work just as good or better.

Those ads are a hoot, like some body said, people just want to believe anything - if you need a space heater go to the farm store and buy one off the shelf.

She uses it for a few hours a day when it's cold. The three years she has had it there has been very little differnce in her light bill from Oct till April.

Dave

I can't believe this topic keeps popping up. It's darn near as bad as the Nigerian scam. I'd bet even the nomadic people of some remote xxovia have heard of the Amish heater scam

I would like to thank everyone for their honest opinion of the heaters. I am stinecorners wife. I thought about ordering one because I thought the profit would go to the amish or some of it.
Yeah that was stupid, because they call people "tourist" and really want their privacy. So being on TV was not something that I believe they would want to do. The man that was the amish spokesperson, sounded sincere.
Should of listened to my husband-reading all the responses was educational.

My father just insisted that I buy one. I am no believer in the next "maricle". After I refused to buy one for myself he purchased one for me.

These are my thoughts:

It makes heat and uses electricity just like every other space heater. It is way over priced and could be replaced by a $35.00 heater from Wal-Mart.

The only thing going for the Eden Pure is that it does not put out dry heat.

In my mind no one can justify the $350-400.

It turned out to be just as I assumed. Too good to be true.

I have a friend that just loves his. He says it runs for 5¢ an hour. Yeah, that sounds about right, $1.00 a day. I have an $89.00 electric fireplace I bought on half-off that does the same thing. But I don't argue with him. He paid more for his so it's "better". Some guys want price, some want "quality. You have to keep them all happy. Reminds me of the hardware keeper that sold two grades of lamp oil. Regular, and High Test. He pumped them out of the same barrel.

Most Amish I know heat with wood, coal or kerosene and some with fuel oil, I can't figure out how they could come up with an electric heater when electric is forbidden in thier homes and alot of their businesses. Just makes you wonder don't it.

he lets you post under his handle? what kinda man do you have? is his junk detachable so you can carry it around too? that poor beaten down man.

They dont use the heaters, they just make the "Beautiful hand finished cherry or oak mantel" You know old world Amish craftsmanship lol

You are correct. With electric you get what you get. watts in equals watts out. PERIOD! The only thing you can change is how well it moves it around the room.

Tried hard to convince the inlaws of this but they bought one anyway to heat some insulated storage space in the garage that has stuff that can't freeze. They used to have a plain, cheap electric heater. The new "fancy" amish one costs them more because it has few heat setting options and therefore keeps the room warmer using more electric and therefore costs them even MORE than before!
