Dad cutting silage

Here is an old picture. Dad was a preacher, but the first church he had was rural, near Arena, North Dakota. They provided a place to live, but the pay left something to be desired! He grew up on a farm, so the farmers hired him out. Here he is operating an IH 706 cutting silage. It would have to have been taken somewhere between 1964 and 1970. Greg

Great Picture Greg:
Going throught the den/junkroom today and found some old pictures that Dad and Mom gave to me when they moved into a smaller house in town - PRICELESS!

The good ole' days! You just see pictures like that and makes you think about how things used to be and how complicated our lives have become. Isn't it funny that a lot of the things that make our lives more"convenient"now(cell phones, computers, etc.)actually a lot of times make our lives more complicated.

Nice picture, its just to bad farming wasent still like that today,,, a bygone era. Thanks for the pic.

Can't agree with that. Cell phones have saved us thousands of miles of driving and whole days chasing parts, etc.

Gotta agree with you there- I don't even have a land line as I have no purpose for it, and being able to make calls from the field if I have a break down or being able to start looking for parts or such right away, or just being able to get ahold of Dad out in the field or anywhere else on our farm. Can plan the day with him while I'm on the road or walking about the yard.

I didn't say it was better or worse. Just seems to me that a lot people I meet now are stressed out and can't live for a day without their computer or cell. I was trying to imply that the picture just harkens back to days of a simpler lifestyle.

Great picture I remember chopping, it was peppermint though. Those of us that farmed without a cell phone know it was a much slower pace and less hectic time. I farmed in the 70's and 80's and didn't go to town very often and farmed 1600 acres of wheat and peppermint. You planned your trips. I know my wife went more than I did but I had farming to do and loved those days too. I was lucky and didn't have to go to town to get seed and fertilizer, just a mile down the road. 12 miles to town. Those tractors before computers and plastic were tough, not a lot you couldn't fix in the field. The '06, '56 and '66 series Farmalls and 20, 30 and 40 series John Deeres were some of the best...James

I believe right after we moved, the town of Arena ceased to be a town.
Friend of mine, when planting, takes his parts manuals to the field. Orders any parts needed from his cell phone, has his wife pick them up on her way back from her city job-AMAZING! Greg

Those were simpler times indeed. Communication is so good today that there is instant spread of good or bad information. A fellow could have a little time to think on something out in the field while on the tractor in the good old days. Decisions weren,t made so instantly as they are today. I saw where ATT is proposing to abandon all of the permanent land lines on poles in the near future due to expense to maintain. Man, how the world is changing. Hate to see it go in a way.
