Think Spring...any plow jockeys out there?

Just thinking about warmer weather today. How many guys will moldboard plow this spring? Anybody got a certain model or brand they like in particular? Just wondering

Here in the midwest we do not do spring plowing. Our soil types are not right for that. I do however plow my corn stocks in the fall. I have a 4-bottom JD 2800 series plow. I like the variable width feature best of all. It does however seem like this plow pulls harder then other plows and does not cover real well. I don't mind the trash on top tho as it keeps ground from eroding. I pull it with a McCormick 105 hp. front wheel assist. Gives her a good pull. I would not want one inch more plow behind that tractor.

Here's mine favorite combo.

Oliver/White has had an excellent reputation for decades. I had an IH 720 for many years before the White 588, still have both, and very easy to see the difference in furrows. White is much more uniform, reset works better and stays in the ground better. Easier to fix, too. JD has a lot of good equipment, but never set the world on fire with tillage equipment. Most green tractors around here pulled White and red plows before disc chisels took over.

I still plow up alfalfa sod and plow corn stalks going back to alfalfa. Use a White plow. Super nice outfit.

Looks like a good seedbed, but around here a duck couldnt walk across it in the spring when it was time to plant.

No one plows around here. I know of one farm that has not even seen a disc in almost 20 years. The organic material is deep. The organic matter will wash away during heavy rain. I think it would be a wise decision to turn it upside down in attempt to conserve that organic matter. The farmer doesnt think so.

Folks around here are so "anti plowing" that it is difficult to even find a spot for plow day!

We dont usually have time to do any spring plowing, but we got out the antiques for some fall plowing.

There are some other clips as well once you get on my page. Just klick on my username.
Some fall plowing

Thanks for the replies. Nice pic Gary. I dont currently moldboard. Always looking at trying different approaches, might try going back to it here and there in certain cases. Always seems to fit up real nice in the spring though.

About 20 acres with our Oliver 1855 pulling an Oliver 546 4-16 plow. We were gonna do another 10 acres in early December but the frost was already in too deep to be able to sink the plow in and pull it. If it would have been corn ground I probably could have done it as that ground is usually a little looser and can get better traction in the bare ground, instead of all the sod that doesn't let the tires dig in.

Will be plowing a bunch of corn stubble down for new seeding this spring. Will use the 4020 on 4-16 JD 145 & 4320 on the JD 2700 set to 4-20 Nothing more enjoyable then moldboard plowing !

Couple days ago, I saw a field that was freshly dug up, even though frozen, crusty. Think they were injecting liquid pig manure from the adjacent farrowing facility. Must have been one heck of a ride!

Come spring, I'll be disking and moldboard plowing a sod field to plant to oats/alfalfa.
Will be using a MF 180 with a semi-mounted 4-16" plow.
There is some lure in grabbing my son's 2-16" trailer plow and pulling it with his '49 JD B.
Can probably do a smoother job with that old relic!

I got my truck patch plowed down in the fall with my MF165 pulling an oooold Dearborn 2-14. Works good for what I'm doing. I guess a 3-14 or 3-16 would be faster, but spending time on the tractor is relaxing to me.

For all you people that answered: do you try to plow all the land? What crops will be planted where you plowed? What about "rippers" as they are called around here? Now a lot of farmers are switching to strip till in the fall. For us, we have not plowed in 20 years. Rip wheat stubble and then work it and run the land leveler over it. No wet pockets. For beans no till aftercorn stalks, for beans plant in the corn stalks

Still a lot of moldboard plowing done here. I plow all the sod that's going into corn, and the fields with corn stubble from combining. The fields I chopped the corn off I can skip plowing and save the time and fuel. Plow what I can in the fall, but most gets done in the spring. Have run a Case 500(made by White), IH 720, and White 508 (currently), all SAR. Like the White, but it's seen a lot of use, and I think some neglect before I got it. Would like to find a Ford/White 5x variable.
