No load starting for hydraulic pump

Somebody asked how to have a no-load start on a wood splitter where the cold hydraulic oil added so much load it was hard to start in cold weather. I remember years ago my uncle put tee's in the pump inlet and outlet lines with a short line between them. He had a shutoff in that line. He would open the valve for no-load starting. It does require a valve which will hold up to the pressure, but it worked very well.

Sounds like a good way to reduce load on the motor / pump.
years ago I had a crankshaft driven pump on a front end loader that really helped cold starting.
It was an aluminum vane type pump, with some sort of mechinism to keep the vanes retracted so they could not pump until I reved the engine above 500 or so rpm. once I exceded that rpm, the vanes would fly out and the pump start buzzing like a normal hydraulic pump in cold weather.
I seem to remember it being Gresen brand, and really thought it was a good setup.
