I'm thinking about cutting off a hand crank and placing it in the center of a sphere so it can be turned without kickback hazard anyone tried such a thing?

A sphere seems a bit hard to store, and a little awkward to grip. Why not a disk blade with a split rubber hose glued to the edge.
Just kidding, it would make a fine projectile if it spun up backwards, and came off!
The reality is that pulling up on a regular crank with fingers and thumbs all cupping the handle, is not dangerous at all.

Is hand cranking the only way you can start your tractor? If you ever had to restart a hand crank cub engine on a IH#64 combine or any machine that had a Wisc. engine after it died you would NEVER want to hand crank an engine EVER!!!!!! Been there-done that. Was lucky enough the cub engine had a ring gear so it got a starter that got its power from the tractor that pulled combine. Armand

the john deere D was started by removing the steering wheel and you had a stub shaft that fit into the flywheel , and it was started that way, by turning the flywheel with the steering wheel. i have started them this way also.also have started W-30 and 10-20 mccormicks by hand with the belt pully.if all them old timers were afraid of the crank no work would have got done. and there is some pretty worn out crank tractors out there.

have my dads f-20 i grew up on and two other f20 and a regular i have hand cranked for years want to keep tractors just as they are no starters.worked construction all my life been in a couple bad wrecks not getting any younger so i thought i would see about an easier way to crank these machines without altering them and be able to do it myself was not asking Janicholson or Rustred for sarcasm just wanted to ask a simple question now read the simple answers i got from these two

Just keep the mag timed so the impulse snaps at or slightly after TDC and pull up slowly & it won't kick. Don't try to spin it.

Others said it, but on a hand crank tractor, timing is absolutely critical. If it sparks before top dead center its gonna kick sometime. Time it right, carb in good shape and a hot mag and it'll start easy. Also check anything that can interfere with fuel/air mix at low cranking speeds, like manifold leaks, valves, etc.
Good luck,
Paul

i was not offering sarcasm i was stating how i started a john deere and mcormicks as most people have never even heard of this probably you also so now is my sarcasm. so if you want to invent something stupid as a starter then someone will laugh at you.other than electic starter the crank is the next best thing.and my first post was just a joke from patty loveless's song. and i dont see any sarcasm in jim's post either, just the truth about your starter idea. how about using another tractor and a flat belt from one to the other. done that also.park it on a ski hill, havent done that!

I have seen many people spinning cranks on old tractor. My uncle got his nose broken cranking a truck.A friend came to school with his arm in a cast.Cranking the Farmall.Kettering invented the electric starter after his friend died after cranking a car for a woman. So many people were hurt cranking Ford they called it Model T arm.How many of you remember how hard a rope start small engine can kick back.

You are very right about pulling upon the crank. I have cranked my tractors many times when the batery was poor. Never worried about kick back. Always pulled up on the crank.
