OT-cold weather in Iowa

NE Iowa's been cold so long can't remember what 20 degrees feels like. Old '84 Chevy truck always starts, but I've got a brake squealin' and thermostat stuck for a bit this morn. I,m sure there's worse problems than mine going on.

Yea know the feeling. Wonder what it would be like living in the south in the winter. I know I can't stand the heat there in the summer. Ill stay in Maine and put up with winter.

Might want to watch that therostat. It could stick, build up pressure then open quick, causing the seam in the tanks of the radiator to split. Ask me how I found that out. Those therostats warp, and will stick.

Let's see:

1) frozen pipes in well pit

2)Hired man destroyed a set of tractor tire chains

3) Bearing went out of feed wagon

4) Soybean meal delivery for tomorrow iffy--may have to ration it for a day or two

5) 4 frozen waterers last weekend--expect the same Friday night/Sat morning

6) Have a nice heated shop. Part-time employee put skidloader in cold storage. Took 4 hrs to get it started. (back in heated shop now)

7) One 1000 hd hog building full of strep

8) Need snowblower to dig out big bales to feed cattle.

Upside--everyone healthy and warm. Plenty of job security

My wife and I got back from Florida Sunday. We were swimming in the Atlantic at Boca Raton on New Year's day. Water temp and air temp were 79F. It was like swimming in warm bath water. Different story this week. 32F in Miami.

All you guys north of Mason-Dixon must be tough to get thru winter. I'm in NW Alabama, unusual cold snap here, low teens at night and 20's during day. Supposed to get 1 to 2 inche of snow Thursday and temp dropping to single digits. Won't see above freezing until next Monday, 40's expected. We have mild winters in comparison to some parts but our summers are brutal.

20F forecast for Sunday here in SE MN. It's going to feel like T-shirt weather around here.

I haven't had much problems due to cold this year (yet). It just seems to take a very long time to get anything done. I had it in my mind that I was going to split a cord of firewood and grind corn on Sunday, but spent all day running around trying to get any trucks and the wood splitter to start. Out of 4 trucks around here, only one would start, but I was thankful for that. I was lucky to get the just the wood done by 6PM, the calves can go with short rations of corn, but the firewood must flow!

South in the winter would be a shock for me. We watched the grandkids open Christmas presents over Skype, they are in south Houston. Hawiwian shorts and no shirts, running in and out of the house. Our daughter was working in her garden that afternoon. Just didn't seem right for Christmas as we've lived all our lives in the north.
