friend brought his buick over and you had to pump the brakes to stop.well all pads were bad but not metal to metal one caliper was bad (leaking) so with all that replaced and blead when you press the petal sometimes you get a good brake and sometimes not. I think the master cylinder is also bad what do you guys think?

pump the pedal and hold it down if it keeps going down you master clynders badsome time you might have to blead the brakes if you put the right front calpter on you might have to blead the left rear on that car

Sounds like a master to me. Take it and since it most likely has power brakes start it up and push on the brake pedal had it and had it hard for as long as you can or till the pedal hits the floor. If it falls and there is no leaks under the car then the master is bad. Of course if you find a leak under the car then you have a broken line some place and maybe even a bad wheel cylinder so look at the rear brake drums for wetness.

this thing has 4 wheel disc and it was the left rear I blead the whole thing after bleeding the new caliper I started with the right rear and then moved back to the left rear then right front then left front. that is the way I was taught farthest to closest to master.it is not spongy but when the petal is bad it slowly leaks down while pressing when it is good you can barely press it without stopping

look at you masterclynder if you have four brake lines come out of it then they fead one front and then fed one rear brake on the other side of the they will go rf to lr and lf to rr

are you saying that is the way to bleed them it does have 4 lines I remember looking at that. I have never ran into this problem before. As a side note the rubber seal under the master cap was badly swollen and would not fit in the lid so we got a new seal so I figured the master may have suffered the same sort of fate

Yea I thought of that too but I didn't see anything other than the one caliper leak. All we have done needed to be and I just don't want him to spend more than he needs to

if you have a masterclynder with 4 lines you go and blead the right rear then the left front then the left rear then the right front if you have the master clynder with four lines do you have antylock brakes ???

My BIL runs a brake shop. If you suspect air in one of the calipers, crimp a rubber hose off with a vice grip, test your pedal, then go to the next until you find the caliper that causes a spongey pedal.

Roy, Does the parking brake pedal say"Pump to set" If it has the ratcheting parking brake(and I am pretty sure it does)the only way to adjust the rear brakes is with the parking brake. And the problems you describe is either air (MS)or brakes out of adjustment, the front are automatic but the rear are manual adjustment. BTW the swelling in the master cyl cap points to oil cotamintion in the MC and it will ruin the seals in the MC and the calipers.
