The windchill is -5, could be much worse I know. I can't usually run our stove full on without making our front room 85 degrees, but these past few days she's been as hot as she can get just to keep up. Been eating the wood too. What stove do you guys have? This one is made by vermont castings, seems to be working good for 10 years now. I don't even run the blower since it's so noisy, just let it radiate. Moved on to some ash and wild cherry now.

High today has been about 18 degrees F; not sure if the central unit (natural gas/forced air) has kicked on or not; stove is a Hearthstone 'Phoenix' (soapstone). House is about 2500 sq ft................

We use a free-standing Avalon "Rainier" in our "great room," which is an open space that includes our dining room, entry foyer and kitchen. It heats about half of our house, or around 1,000 sf. It takes a 20" log, but 18" fits better, especially if it's wide. It has a brass-rimmed glass door that is delightful to watch the fire burn. We keep it around 70-72 degrees most of the time when we're home. We keep the thermostat for the propane furnace set at 62. It takes about two hours for the stove to raise the temperature about 10 degrees when it's in the teens outside. We have five 8' x 5' windows plus a 6' x 6'-8" glass French door. We really enjoy the stove.

I have a Thermo Control wood boiler in the basement, ties into the base board, or oil boiler water heating system, and I have a Timberline woodstove insert in my fireplace in the kitchen.

-19 temp here this am, high was 4 above, coldest I ever remember around here, old man in c-store said 1936 was a colder winter, I am too young to say that, shop wood stove isnt helpinmg much, but at least you can warm you hands, LOL

On my third and best one now, a Rohn, which is no longer made. Started with a standard Franklin and later a Vermont Castings. This Rohn will devour 26 inch long logs, nine inches in diameter. Has a remote firebox thermostat air inlet control and a variable hot air fan controlled by firebox temperature. I run with a fixed or shut air box inlet and never need to use the fan. Easily heats a 2800 sq ft two story home with it in a finished basement.

We have a Jotul, made in Norway, very efficient, pretty much heats the house. It has been about -30F the last three nights, I have to put wood in at least every 4 hours, not a problem for an older guy!

got an indoor wood forced air furnace
newmac made in canada been colder than heck here in ontario kinda spoiled cause house is running about 76 deg almost gotta open a window to cool it off makes yah not wanna go out side.

I've got an Appalachian insert with the catalytic elements. It usually takes most of the heat load for my 1100 sq feet downstairs off of my gas pak and still goes up the stairs to help the heat pump the other 700 sq feet. As of Sunday it's carrying all of the downstairs since my gas pak is out of comission with a bad heat exchanger. Between it and two 1500 watt oil filled heaters it's keeping the house in the low 70's with no problem even though it's in the teens at night and staying below freezing most of the day. I just wish I had one of the larger outdoor heaters so I could zone it to heat the whole house along with my shop. Being able to use the bigger pieces of wood and only load it once or twice a day would sure make things alot easier.

Hi OG,

Put a slow moving fan in the room will help as well as a pan of water onto of the stove. Both will make you feel alot warmer than with out.

We design room air for 70ºf@50%r.h. where most people feel comfortable.

Make the room air 70º@30%r.h. and you will need a sweater to keep warm.

Make the room air 70º@80%r.h. and you'll be naked trying to keep cool. :)

Winter air has very little humidity so we must always humidify the air.

I'll do that with the pan of water. I remember doing it when I was younger at home. But if it's not so dry my kids won't be able to run around and shock each other as easy!! Thanks

We have an H.S. Tarm indoor wood gasification boiler from Holland, if I'm not mistaken. I just had to replace the tunnel stone today, but it's been about three years since the last one so I'm not complaining. It does a good job, but needs a lot of wood since we live in a converted barn that is way too big.
