A couple of my herfords. Grass/hay fed only.

Those are some kinda purty. Reminds me of when I was a kid, we raised white faced herefords. Those were the days.

Nice fat fellers there. And you say grass and hay? You must have some really good grass. How old are they?

Nope, some degree of the white stripe goes with all Herefords, "polled" means no horns, genetically bred out, not just recessive but out

Ma with the neck chain Iv had for 5 years, I think she was maybe 4-5 when I got her, Calf next to her was maybe 1 1/2 or two at time of pic, right now she is 3, and needs to be bred. And no the white strip means nothing, polled means no horns!

Polled herefords does not mean they have a feather on the back and white face..a hereford is a hereford. Polled means no horns.

Nice cows. Here is my newest calf 12/27/09

Very Nice, I dont get why herefords get such a bad rap around these parts, they seem like good gainers and docile, and I know they are good eaters. I am starting to put some polled shorthorn into my beef cows with a bull this year. I want to rid my herd of a few red crosses that are just cantakoris and not good performers, maybe I need a couple POLLED herefords in the mix. Hereford shorthorn a good cross?

I dont know about that cross. I dont cross mine. My father in law crossed his with a Jersey bull! I dont have any commet about that!!:(

Nice looking cows. About a third of my herd are still polled or horned Herefords. They do have a good disposition for the most part. That being said they do have problems. They have a high risk of developing cancer eye. They also have a nasty habit of vaginal prolapse. I have found that polled Herefords are higher strung than horned Herefords. With horned tho you have the nasty job of dehorning. The main drawback is buyers do not want red hair. Around here red hair means a 15 to 20 cent dock for the calves. I breed mine to black Angus bulls. The resulting black baldies gain better than the pure bred Hereford or Angus parents. The baldy mothers also make much better mothers than Hereford mothers. They are definitely higher strung than Herefords tho. Doesn't take much to get them wound up and running for the hills.

Here's a picture from last winter at feeding time.

Very sharp.

My Grandfather ran Herefords for ever. Beef cow should be red with white faces in my book.

Not sure why everyone has to have black animals these days. The fellow added a few Black Angus to his herd and they're a little nutty although he did say they're good moms. The Hereford/Angus cross he had pastured at my place simple didn't like people, once he started running you just hoped he would stop...
