OT! battery dead in wifes car

Wifes new car, 2008 ford mustang. Wouldn't start last night-dead battery. Nothing left on, no apparent cause to drain battery.

Swapped out batteries this morning, started it and it read 14.4 volts across the battery terminals.

Does this voltage reading indicate that the alternator is charging, and the old battery just went bad?

Vehicle is still under warranty, but the battery is not...I guess that one will be on me!

If you have 14.4 across the terminals when running then you are definitely charging. The most you will typically see out of a 12 volt battery by itself is about 12.8 in most situations. Sounds like your battery just went shot, you can try trickle charging it and seeing if it will come back to life, but if you have already turned it in for a core then oh well. I went to start my truck last night and it would barely turn over, I guess it is time for me to get new batteries too. The previous owner put Optima red tops, but this is the second time I have had to jump it to get it started when it is cold out, so it looks like I will be making a trip to sears to buy batteries.
