looking on google earth , what is the story on gull island? it looks uninhabited, as well as the story on the next island with st james township on it , it lists another township. but i dont see it , kind of looking for isolated places with low human presence and just plain good people

Go to Isle Royal and sleep with the wolves. Pretty neat place. Since it's a National Park island in Michigan, anybody can go there.

There are not a lot of islands in the great lakes in private hands. There are 2 Gull islands near Beaver Island. Both are part of wildlife refuges. I believe much of Beaver is owned by the state. Occasionly, island properties come up for sale, but be prepared to bring some really big $$$. Probably the most expensive waterfront property there is. I went camping there years ago, most private property is family stuff, handed down over the generations.

thanks guys i thought that might be the case, but i also wondered if the winter there was just too severe to make it feasable to stay

My brother-in-law is from the UP, and I had some friends who went to college there (Michigan Tech or Northern Michigan). Plenty of people live up there but you have to tolerate cold weather, no getting around it. Real estate prices aren't too bad once you get away from the lakes, but unemployment is high and during the few months of nice weather in the summer there are lots of tourists.

Much warmer here than many other places, the lakes really moderate the temperatures. Places in WI were [b:3940ea4df3]-[/b:3940ea4df3]20~30 last night where we were around zero. But we do get a lot more snow than most other places, thanks to the lake.
