When cutting up my deer , my folding Uncle Henry knife failed to lock properly. I called Schrade & they gave me an address to send it along with a check for return shipping. Today in the mail I got a pleasant surprise. They sent back the knife (not repaired) along with a new knife & leather carring case. Good customer service.

Taylor Brands bought up the Schrade brand a few years ago, about a year after the family closed the original Schrade. Taylor Brands markets several knife brands, including Smith & Wesson. Unfortunately, they are all made in Taiwan.

worst knife I ever bought was a cheap Smith & Wesson pocket knife. Broke apart, then fell apart under very light use (cutting bale twine). Best one I ever bought was recently, a Stihl single blade 3 1/2" folding knife. Bright orange handle so you can find it anywhere but sharpest blade I ever saw. Skinned & gutted 1000 lb. bull and it glided thru that tough hide. Didnt mean to do the whole bull with it, just thought I'd start out (brand new-hadn't used it) & see what it'd do! Better by far than any other knife & I've cut up 100's of deer & cow. $10 at Stihl dealers. Solingen (German) blade. Also have 2 1/2" Stihl folder that I cannot keep sharp but much tougher than that worthless S & W.

A fixed blade knife is a far better choice for serious work.It doesnt take much to mess up most lock back knives.

For Christmas 10 years ago my dad bought me a new pocket knife. It is a Kershaw with the blade assist [military] and cost $150.00.

Well this has been the best knife a person would ever want and i carry it everyday.

The material that the blade is made out of is very hard and it held its edge for years.

I tried sharpening it with out any luck and took it to a place to have it done correct and they told me it had to go back to Kershaw to be sharpened.

Well i found them on the web and sent it in .

When it came back they didn't sharpen it they sent me another brand new one. What a nice suprise that a company would do that.

This one looks the same feels the same but doesn't have that real hard blade that we were not able to sharpen.

Schrade went out of business and laid off everybody shortly after their 100 year anniversary 3-4 years ago. It was a big deal at the time. I used to repair some of their equipment (estate tractors) in Ellenville, New York. They were one of biggest employers in that area, other then the many NY prisons.
A new company bought the Schrade name and most of the knives are made overseas. A few high-priced specialty knives are still made in the US, down south.

If I remember right my grand father worked at that knife factory too. I think there were a few knife factories here in NY days gone buy. I think there were some near Walden NY or Kingston. Cant remember, Id have to ask dad.

Isent it stamped on the blade, I have a Uncle Henry Schrade LB7 U.S.A stamped on it. Got it from Kmart 18 years ago, now all they sell is junk. I do have the Stihl knife as posted above and it is a great knife too.J

My brother gave me an Old Timer for Christmas in 78. Sept 79 I was knocked off my motorcyle and landed on it. It twisted one end of the knife. I have pushed to hard on it while trying to sharpen it and so the main blade is sloppy loose, side to side. I would like to have it repaired, but I want that knife back, NOT a replacement. And so I won't send it in.

Schrade was first in Walden and then moved to Ellenville. It was part of the Imperial Knife Company so I'm not sure exactly what it was called when in Walden. I used to live nextdoor to Ellenville and did repair work on some of the tractors that Schrade owned.

Hey JD, I spent 33 years in various NYS prisons, the last 22 at Wallkill right there in the Hudson Valley. In celebration of their 50th anniversary, they acquired and sold commemorative knives to their employees made by Schrade just over the mountains from there. I have one and it"s a beautiful thing but needless to say, I"ve never cut a thing with it. LOL

I was looking at a knife collectors book, and it says Ulster Knife Company bought Schrade in 1947 and moved to Ellenville in 1957. A bus would bring employees from Walden to Ellenville every day. Pretty neat, now this is befor my time, and grandpa is no longer around to talk about it, as he was born in Walden. Do you remember anything like this. Im not saying you an old guy...lol :) J

Like many businesses, Schrade was all over the place. Some guys from Italy started part of it in Rhode Island. Ellenville had its own small knife company (Ulster something or another). The companies merged and Schrade-Walden Cutlery was founded in the 1940s. It was moved to Ellenville in the late 50s. When I did work for them in Ellenville, I know that some of their best knives were made in Ireland.
Now, who knows? Smith and Wesson (knives) and Schrade are now owned by the same company and many of the cheaper knives are made in China.

Another long time NY knife manufacturer was Camillus Cutlery , which used to make Boy Scout knives as well as many others. They closed up a couple years ago after over 100 years in business.

My dad had a camillus. Worked cutting silk in mill in SC. Respected knive down there. All his were stolen years ago.
