pilot bushing for farmall super a

The pilot bushing is located in the flywheel and requires splitting the tractor to replace it. If you don't know where it is what makes you think it requires replacement? Sam
 
Just been having a look at the online parts book and it appears you are right about the location of the bushing. Not that far from the flywheel though. I just did a couple of clutches in H's and I'm evidently getting muddled up. Sam
 
Ya don't need any special puller. Fill the cavity in the pilot bearing with some heavy grease, then with a roll shaft or round steel rod (has to be just a little smaller than inside of bearing)Put shaft or rod in the hole and hit end with large hammer. This causes hydraulics and grease will force the bearing out of the end of the crankshaft.

mechanic at a local dealership suggested it might be the cause of the problem i'm having with having to shut off the engine to shift gears

As to why you need to replace your pilot bushing. I'm assuming that you've checked all of the easy things. You have the correct amount of 90wt gear oil in the transmission? When you say you have to turn the tractor off to shift you are giving it, say 10 seconds or so, to slow down after you press the clutch and before you try to put it in gear? What if you start it in gear and shift it to neutral, can you get it back in gear? Sam

if your bearing is dry/rusted the trans input shaft could continue to turn when clutch pedal is down

to test, stop the tractor still in gear, if you can shift easily quickly but noisily if you stop between gears then it might be that bearing

may as well plan on doing clutch while you have it apart
