O/T Big Rig engines

all the above except Cat , add Mercedes , and a few others Cat doesn't made any engines for the highway since the new epa laws .

North American manufactured highway trucks almost always use an engine built by a third party, such as CAT, Cummins, or Detroit Diesel. The only exceptions to this are Volvo and its subsidiary Mack Trucks, which are available with their own engines. Freightliner Trucks, Sterling Trucks and Western Star, subsidiaries of Daimler AG, are available with Mercedes-Benz and Detroit Diesel engines. Trucks and buses built by Navistar International usually also contain International engines. The Swedish manufacturer Scania claims they stay away from the U.S. market because of this third party tradition.

Detroit Diesel is a fully owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz, as is Freightliner and Western Star. (So was Sterling(formerly Ford) before they shut it down last year).

Cat is OUT of the highway engine market as of 2010. I don't know if that's effective as of yesterday or a generalization of the 2010 'model' year.
Cummins, Detroit, Mercedes Benz, Mack, Volvo, and International will remain.
I think you'll find that FreightLiner is going to focus mostly on using DD/Benz engines with some Cummins. IH will be using their 'own' MaxForce engine (which I think is a rebadged Cat). Volvo/Mack seem to mostly use their own.
PACCAR (Pete/Ken) is also going to their 'own' which I think is based on a European DAF engine though I think Cummins is still an option....
I think IH is keeping Cummins as an option as well... but the days of third party engines are coming to an end. They're complaining about the problems and expense involved with integrating these foolish emission systems into the chassis so they want to eliminate as much expense as possible by eliminating the options...
Sterling is also gonzo...

PACCAR/Cummins made a joint deal & built joint factory about 3 - 4 years ago, too.....& they have ties with DAF as well. Purity of breed is a thing of the past. Mergers, mergers, mergers.

Navistar as of now is using only their own engines which are a MAN (German) & will eventually have a bigger bore which will be a Cat derivitave. Pacar is using Cummins, & their own which is a DAF(Pacar owns DAF. Volvo & Mack use their own. Both owned by Volvo. Damiler, owns Freightliner & Western Star & they use their own engine(Detroit Diesel), no more Mercedes in this country. They also have Cummins as a option.

mack no longer makes an engine volvo owns mack now have volvo engines that say mack on valve covers the dog is dead
