I had an opossum eating cat food when I went in shed to feed the cats. Never had the prob when the dog was around but he got run over on hyway about 2 mo. ago. Really miss that old dog but that's another story. Any way I have a rifle that I got from a neighbor years ago. I have not fired it for maybe 15 years. I have it and some shells up in the rafters of the pump house. By the time I crawled up there and got it the opossum was gone. I don't know anything about guns so I don't know if this is an old gun or a collect0r or just another 22 like a million others out there. So when I had it down today I wrote down the info from the gun. Remington model 12-A, short/long, patent dates 1909,10,11 and the final one April 16, 1912. Anyone know what I got here? Also the box of shells I bought when I got the gun maybe 30 years ago still has the price tag on it. Scheels sport store $1.59 How does that price compare to today?

I have one just like it. Quite a collectible gun, not worthy of being stored in the rafters.

Don't try to shoot long rifle ammo through it. They won't fit. Finding longs might be a challenge.

Do you remember back when Scheels was primarily a hardware store? I wouldn't step foot in one of their stores nowadays but I sure bought a lot of stuff there years ago.

You might try this site for evaluating your fireatm: http://aaa-webs.com/aaa/webs/homestead/courses/Remington12/history-Rem12.htm

I have one exactly like that. It was my great grandpa"s when he was a kid. Bought it for .18 cents at the local hardware store as a kid. Was handed down through the family, have pics if you"d like, get that thing outta the barn ha ha!

I wouldn't advise fireing "any" gun stored & never fired for 15 years before a gunsmith cleaned and inspected. The rifle is worth more than enough as wall decoration($150 to $250)to buy a used modern 22,shotgun or centerfire. If the barrel is octagonal, add 50%. I do recall when you lost your pardner. I thought sure another dog would have "found" you by now.

Clean it up real good and if you have some one close have them look it over before you fire it. If found to be ok then buy some shot shells for it that way you can be close and still hit that varmint. I keep shot shells for my 44mag and they are almost a no miss thing at say 20 yard and even if you get a close miss it is most likely a hit I may self play with guns all the time Play as in use them and collect them when I can and have a friend with an FFL

Sell that gun to a collector. If you fire a long rifle cartridge in that gun the rim may burst and give you an eye full of burning powder.

Your 12A was made from 1909 to 1936 about 840,000 total. It is chambered for .22 short, long or long rifle. The most important thing with guns is condition, condition and condition. Your rifle in perfect condition is worth about $925. down to about $300. in 60% condition. After all the storage make sure you very carefully check the bore. If all is OK you can shoot whatever you want in it including .22LR.

If rust is evident on the gun body I would sure check the barrel bore for it. don't fire it if rusty. If clean ,give it a good oiling and it will shoot shorts, longs and long rifle ammo.It may have some collectable value ,I wouln't know about that.to me $100.00 may be my estimate. A lot of them built and a lot still around.A ball bat will take care of a 'Possum real quick.

If you have your doubts about the firearm take it to a local gunshop (not a big box store) have them look it over. Its not fun when one self destructs in your face. No one can talk you through gun care on a message board.

Its fun to shoot opossums but even more fun to just club them with whatever is avaliable. I killed one eating cat food with my cordless drill flashlight one night cause it was all I had and finished him with a truck tire.

I would recommend getting a gun smith to look it over. And if you go to
www.gunbroker.com you can find out how much it is worth.
There should be a stamped .22LR or other indication of the ammo that is to be used.

You need to have a gunsmith look at it and also ask him what shells are safe to shoot in it and have him show you what to use and how to clean it.Long Rifle shells might work but you want to make real sure.If its alright to shoot then you need to keep it somewhere else besides in the rafters and clean it every 6 months or so whether or not you shoot it.You want to clean it before you shoot it every time it has set for a while. It doesnt take a lot sometimes for a gun to rust, some peoples fingerprints will rust stuff up bad.Once you get it where you can look at it,check it for rust often.
One of those in good shape is worth some money. Its not worth anything if you cant shoot it.

22 rifles blowing up??

My friends and I grew up around old clunky guns, but I've never heard of a 22 rifle blowing up. If the barrel is leaded up or obstructed in some other way, then I could understand it.
When I was a kid back in the "50's, I had an old worn out rusty Stevens Crack Shot 22 and it was loose as a goose, but I shot it constantly.

I know shotguns and higher caliber guns can blow up, but 22's??
Never heard of such a thing.

But if that concerns you, just get some 22 CB's.
They don't have powder in them, just a cap,
And out of a rifle they're no louder than a BB gun. They just make a "spat" noise, but they will kill any small animal, possums included.

if it says short/long on it I would not shoot long rifle shells in it as others are saying to do! bill m.
