Tire advice...

Hey folks,
I need to get new shoes in the near future.
2006 KIA Sorento (SUV) w/ 245/70/16 tires.

Name brand tires will cost me $250+ each here with china made stuff running around $150 each.
I can get one type of tire at the Military Exchange for a decent price but these stores have a habit of switching suppliers and/or discontinuing items.
Thinking about The Tire Rack because they'll ship to me but have been away so long that I don't know what is a good tire.

Best sellers are a Continental crosstrack, a couple of Kuhmo (origin??), and a General Grabber.

Mostly highway with a little accross the pasture or on a decent dirt road.

Any advice or experience?

Kumho is a korean brand, and a darn fine tire. General Grabbers are excellent tires. And the Continental is a generally good tire too.

I have experience owning all three of these brands, and I can tell you that I had the best service from the General grabbers I used to have on my truck. I got about 65,000 miles out of the first set, and still working on the second.

The kumhos were also a great tire for me, I ran them for a few years on my wife's vehicle.

The continentals I owned were ok too, did not seem to get the wear out of them that I did from the other two brands though.
 
Well Dave, I really like Pirelli Tires. Kinda spendy but I have always had good luck with them. Continnentals have always given me problems with cord breakage. Maybe it's just me.
 
I second the motion for Kumho"s. I have a set out here that I bought the day after I got out of the 80"s. They are 2 yrs old w/a short 45000 on them and they are going strong. At least a third of those miles are gravel and I never lined the p.u. after I hung them. Also got road hazard on them. The Continentals are a good tire but they are a softer compound I think. If my wife can"t tear them up, most people will get good service out of them.Toyo used to make a good tire also but haven"t tried a set in over 10 yrs.

I"ve bought my tires from AAFES (the BX) the last few times and bought the Michilins. They"ve lasted longer than what the ratings say for them...I bought the harmony 80k miles and they lasted a bit longer than 80 almost 90k.

remember you save in sales tax and you get coupons in the mail to use there.
 
ile vote for the kumho, i have a pair of them on the steer axle of my kenworth so far ive run them 60 thousand miles in a on road/off road application [lots of twisting and squirming] there still at 1/2 tread ive bought all kinds of tires for trucks over the years, and these are the longest lasting by far, no problems with them at all, shoot, i havent even had a flat on them i would imagine there light duty tires are of similar quality
 
Hmm.

Typical US highway speeds: 70-80 mph.
Typical German autobahn speeds: 130-180 km/hr => 80-110 mph.

You might want to check with your German friends to find out which tires stay in one piece at autobahn speeds.
 
dave, I am running a set of BFG TAs 285/75R16 on my F350 diesel 4X4. I have about 25000K miles on them now, got them back in March. In the past I have not been a huge fan of the old original TA tread pattern. But the guys @ N.T.B. advised me that the TA had a harder, better wearing rubber than the others I was looking at. I am most pleased so far with wear and most of all the traction. They were no where near as expensive as the quote above!
Mine were installed, with life time warrenty w/ road hazard and the old ones taken off my hands, Tax, Title, Tags for $1050. Hope this helps!

Continental USED to be a good tire. The ones that came on my Freestyle were crap. I went through 6 tires in 30K miles. I third the motion for Kumho tires - never had a bad experiance with them in almost 20 years.

It is called "speed rating". As Dave surely knows he has to match or better the speed rating that was OEM for the car (on the door sticker).

Although it does bring up a good point regarding recommendations from the USA folk. While a KIA is surely no left lane vehicle it will sure see speeds higher then the average US tire, thus skewing some of the recommendations? Would seem so to me.
 
We've had Continental's and Pirelli's on two new cars and both were shot by the time they had 20,000 miles on them. The Pirelli's were real bad in snow. Perillei's are way oversold.
 
I've got those BFG TAs also. Plenty of tread and good tread wear but that hard rubber is plain heck on the ice and hard pack. I've been slipping and sliding all over. Have to run in 4wd about all the time. This morning with a light dusting of snow, I went around a corner not very fast and tapped the brakes because of a parked car and it slid instead of biting. Had a choice, either brake harder and put it into a slide that may take out the car or a fire hydrant or let it slow down on it own and steer it into my neighbors front yard between the hydrant and the parked car. I think my neighbor won't mind the two feet of tracks in his yard considering the alternatives with his car sitting there.
 
The Continentals and the Generals are essentially the same tire internally, made by the same company- the General HTS is a fine tire that you would do well with. Kumhos, Hankooks, Rikens- all Korean and pretty good stuff at their price points. Check out Uniroyal Laredo CC prices- fine tire now that Uni is owned by Michelin.
