My colleague is from Poland and says they made a tractor back in the 40's and'50's made of cast iron, multi-fuel,single cylinder that NEVER broke down. This tractor had more power than "modern" tractors,he says. There is a video on U-tube of one pulling against 3 tractors and winning! Has anyone ever heard of this tractor.
 
Yes I've heard of it. Very similar to the British Field Marshall and the German Lanz Bulldog. Anyone who tells you that a particular type of tractor never breaks down either has a bad memory or is a good salesman. The only tractor that never breaks down is the one that never gets used. That said though they are very simple and robust machines and would probably seldom break down. As to being more powerful than a modern tractor, how do you know that the three tractors it was towing weren't considerably less powerful than it? In their day they would have been very powerful tractor though (about 45hp if memory serves me correctly). Sam
 
Tis same guy now says "horsepower means nothing". It is torque that creates the power? I believe that horsepower must at least be a major determinant of torque. He says trains can have very low "horsepower" and that it is all about torque.
 
Horsepower isn't meaningless, but it's not the be all and end all. Torque is the amount of twisting force applied to something, there is no speed or time requirement. Horsepower is amount of work required to lift 33000lbs one foot in a minute. At the end of the day if you have sufficient HP then gearing can take care of the torque end of things. An engine which will generate a lot of torque requires little gear reduction, while one that creates less torque will require greater reduction. Hopefully some of that helped. Sam
 
Generally speaking a slow running engine with a long stroke will create quite a lot of torque. Necessarily all of the parts have to be built very heavily as another way of looking at torque is 'stress'. An engine that revs high with a short stroke will usually generate (relatively) more horsepower than torque. If you look at most old tractor engines, they run slow, have (relatively) little horsepower, long strokes, and generate impressive torque. It's also why diesel engines (high compression ratio and long stroke) generate more torque than a comparable gasoline powered engine. Sam
 
horsepower is the ability to lift so much weight in a given period of time. In the early A.M. when one is young going into the bathroom having ones organ protude over the sink, and pushing down on the organ with all your mite, as your feet lift off the floor. That my friends is TORQUE
